"Medicine By The Numbers Isn't Enough" | Arthritis Information

This is about diabetes, but I think it could apply to other chronic conditions:

http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/06/06/medicine-by-the-numbers-isnt-enough/  From the article:
"Krumholz cites other recent studies that showed that a strategy that should theoretically improve outcomes made no difference or made things worse."

The link didn't work for me until I removed the 20% it tacked on the end.

I liked this comment.  Don't I say that?  LOL

one thing missing in the biomarker related research is they forget to integrate the individual signalling pathway/molecule into the whole physiology system, that’s why nothing works. medicine is not just about DNA, it is about the physiology homeostasis, DNA/gene is just a tool.

I'm convinced that doctors are willing to accept a certain amount of 'collateral damage' in order to treat patients. We need to expect the same, but it's up to us to make those choices with our eyes open. We can't expect the doctors to do everything.
