Hi Boney. I take aziothioprine and I have been on BP meds for many years. Mine is Avalide, a combination of irbesartan and hydroclorothiazide (a diuretic). Irbesartan is not an ACE inhibitor, it is an AII RA. I have never heard anything about not taking the two together. I'll be interested to hear what your docs say.
I have no experience with either medicine. I am concerned that your doctor seems clueless that there may be a contradiciton! Well...at least he is looking into it for you now.
I forgot to ask you the other day- you said the prednisone has been doing a good job making you feel well but further damage has occured. How did they find out? Did they take more xrays or was it from that dexascan you had recently?
Before taking azathioprine, tell your doctor if you are taking, have taken, or need to take any of the following medicines:
allopurinol (Zyloprim);
mercaptopurine (Purinethol);
methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Immunex);
a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune);
olsalazine (Dipentum), or sulfasalazine (Azulfidine);
sulfamethoxasole and trimethoprim (Trimpex, Proloprim, Bactrim, Septra, others); or
an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik).
This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with azathioprine. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
