Dehydration with Meds?? | Arthritis Information

I am curious if anyone seems to be drinking a whole lot more water since taking meds for their RA?  I have to drink around 8 glasses of water/day or I start to feel bad.  I was so busy on Saturday I had only one glass. That night about 9pm I was so nauseated, and felt so bad...woke up out of my sleep with dry heaves.  (I thought maybe it was due to my Plaquenil increase from 200 to 400 mg??) I drank 3 glasses of water, and about an hour later the nausea went away but woke up several more times that night just still not feeling good like I had the flu. I'm still dizzy since increasing my meds 4 days ago, but doctor said to give it a week. Not sure if it's the meds doing this or if anyone has felt like this too?

Any ideas?

I'm currently taking 400mg celebrex, 400 mg plaquenil, 4,g medrol
I usually drink about 10 full glasses of fluids daily.  You need to flush your kidneys and your liver and this helps.  Also, dehydration can happen quickly, especially if it's warm.  Make sure you drink your usual amount and then some.  On MXT and Humira days I drink more than usual.  It's good for your kidneys and liver.  Of course too much isn't good for you but that's usually an amount that most people never consume.  Lindy

1 glass of water is not nearly enough for someone not taking medication.  what else were you drinking that day.  The symptoms you describe could be dehydration, heat exhaustion, a virus etc so they can be due to something else other than the meds

I have a great dislike for water. I really have to force myself to drink it.buckeye:

I just had my normal decaf coffee, some juice, normal meals etc. It was a cool rainy day here, just a lot of running around. Before the RA happened, I would have been fine just drinking coffee and maybe water or pop with my meals. It's just strange now how much water I have to drink in order to feel normal.
drink drink and drink

I was on the receiving end of serious dehydration and electrolyte imbalance a couple of weeks ago after just 3 hours of gastro.  I ended up in hospital for 9 days.  I must be more careful to drink lots more than I had been.

You really need to drink a good couple of litres a day at the very least.
I get so tired of running to the restroom too.....

Pammy416: Oh my gosh, that's awful! May I ask what happened? (what do you mean 3 hrs of gastro???)

yeah, it happened again to me this morning. A little worried now. I normally start drinking my water at 8am. couldnt until 9am, felt so sick and nauseated again! After I started drinking my water (60 oz) the nausea went away.  Its not like I've been exercising, or it's hot out! I just came to work like I normally do & it's rainy and cold outside. I might call my doctor.

klynn,  I woke up at 6:30 in the morning to be sick and just figured I had a tummy bug.  I have absolutely no memory of the whole day.  I remember going to bed at night and nothing til about 8pm the next night.  All I know is what my husband and daughter told me.  Apparently I called in sick to work, called the dr and talked to my mum onthe phone.  Then my daughter found me sitting on the side of the bed, confused and sick.  She dressed me and took me to the car and drove to the dr (2 minutes away).  She put me in a wheelchair and took me into the dr and he just called an ambulance.  I didn't know where I was and I was being violently sick and had diarrhea.  I was totally confused.  I even had a CT scan because the confusion was so bad they thought I had had a stroke or an aneurism.  In the end I was just on IV fluids with lots of calcium, potassium and phosphate to try and balance my electrolytes.  Like I said I was in hospital for 9 days.

I must have been mildly dehydrated and then the gastro bug tipped me over the edge and put me dangerously close to a serious problem.

Now I have to have blood work done every week for a few weeks and I'm on heaps of extra potassium and calcium tablets.  I have to see a new gastro specialist too to see if he can get my chronic tummy problems sorted out.

So like I said   drink   drink   drink
