I am interested in knowing how much, what kind, etc....  ThanksI prefer the enteric-coated variety.  It releases in the intestine instead of the stomach.  This produces greater absorption and less chance of stomach upset.  You want around 3 grams/day (combined) of the omega-3 fatty acids - EPA and DHA.  Most capsules have 1 gram of fish oil, with 300 mg of EPA and DHA (combined).  You definitely need to check the label.  Depending on the concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, you may have to take anywhere from 4 to 10 capsules per day.  You also need to run it by your doctor first - especially at the higher doses, fish oil is not without side effects.  Most notable are lowered immunity and longer bleeding times.

Check with your doctor, and good luck!!
Thanks Jas!not many on fish oil..my doc says sardines have the oils we need

but dont mix whith gravy   what about salmon oil? I feel so much better with it....

Jasmine..
What are the side effects? Lowered immunity/longer bleeding?? I never heard of this?
I use to take the essential women brand of omega mixture.. but tried the pure salmon oil and noticed a huge improvement. [QUOTE=Donna927]what about salmon oil? I feel so much better with it....

Yep - there is an increased tendency to infection with the higher doses.  It also affects blood clotting, so there is a tendency toward longer bleeding times. If you have to have surgery (even oral surgery) you should stop taking it a week or so beforehand, and if you have to have emergency surgery make sure to let your medical team know you're taking high-dose fish oil!  It can also affect triglyceride and cholesterol levels, but usually not too severely.  It tends to raise the good cholesterol as well.  Some also experience various gastrointestinal effects that I won't describe here.  If you start out with a couple capsules a day and gradually increase the dose you should be able to adjust without too much gastrointestinal unrest. Fish body oil capsules do not contain vitamin A, C, D, or any of the B vitamins.  Most have a small amount of vitamin E added to prevent the oil from going rancid. "Fish body oil capsules do not contain vitamin A, C, D, or any of the B vitamins."

Hi Jasmine, I may have been taking oil that was boosted with B12.  Did a quick search and there are a lot of recommendations to increase effectiveness with B12 supplements. I know there was a list of vitamins on the jar & it was on the list.

Also, may have been some more sinister ingredient. We had a lot of trouble in Australia with "fish oil" from a well-respected natural medicine supplier, sold by pharmacies, that was in fact olive oil.  So could have been  anything I guess.
I take a product called nordic naturals...from norway i believe. a bit more pricey. these are flavored with orange or lemon and i have not had any trouble with burping up fish or stomach upset. I take fish oil from Norway - not sure if you can get it in America however that nordic naturals might be the same as this is also flavoured with lemon/lime.  There is a good article at www.rheumatology.org.au/community/documents/Fishoils.pdf explaining how much should be taken.  A lot of research has been done here on it and many people take it.crap!  Take more than 10 1000mgs????

does anyone actually do that??

I just bought Krill.........  trying to avoid the ugly inhabitants of many fish and ergo the fish oil pills..

well, I have ever taking three pills in one day...dose for one pill is 1000 mg....

I usually just take two...a day ...

I would never take that many of anything...

I think I am ok to take a few... they are suppose to be good for heart and brain health

I had some gas/constipation thing going on... but I am not sure if it was fish oil or from the spiriluina
I am taking. I also am taking probiotics after meals and an protelytic enzyme...
not sure which may have been the culprit. I stopped all for a day and I am adding gradual...

I think it was either the enzyme or blue green algae???

I am keeping the fish oil in me. At the low dose I am on, it can probably help somewhat.

Most people can't take 10 capsules a day which is why they suggest the oil.  If you google research on fish oil there has been a lot of work done on it and they have proof that it is beneficial but only at high doses.  There are many people here on those doses recommended by our rheumatologists so I don't think it is crap!

Thanks for all the replies.  I am due for a rheumy appointment later this month and I will ask him about it then.My rheumy started me on the liquid fish oil at my first visit , the oil is sold at most pharmacies and also direct through the royal adelaide hospital. I take 15 mls daily of melrose - norwegian omega fish oil EPA 18/DHA 12 taken the right way you dont get the ruflux. I have had good success with only a few salmon oil capsules a day and those other items i mentioned.
at least for now:)
My flare is almost over   the serrapeptase enZyme is amazing....i have no pain.....i think it is trial and error
Is it the spirulina or is it thesalmon, or is it my diet.... probiotics.

i feel better and not taking hard medicines or experiencing side effects from meds
thats what I like:)

i listen to drs. but we research things too...
I am getting their input and discussing things but I feel like I do most of the researching
and it is great to hear others and ways to help each other.

Good input. thank you.
