Has anyone noticed that their sense of taste and smell isn't the same now that you are taking meds like MTX, Arava, Plaquenil.

I have  noticed that my sense of taste has changed.  I get a craving or something for a particular food and when I get it it doesn't taste like I remember it.   Like a Crunchie bar.....or a Coffee Crisp, tasted totally different from what I remember.  Things don't taste as good as I remember them tasting.  Cheeses, chocolate, lots of stuff I used to love I try now and the taste seems to have changed.  I don't know whether its a change to the product or a change in my tastebuds.

I've also noticed lately that I smell a certain smell that I don't recognize.  I don't recall having this smell thingie before my last hospital visit a couple of weeks ago.  I had thought it was something in the room because that was the first I ever smelled it, but I still smell it occasionally at other times.  At home, or even out.  It

This is really strange but pre RA I had lost my sense of smell. If I inhaled VERY deeply I could smell things but mostly I couldn't. Now all of a sudden I have a heightened sense of smell. My RD even wrote that one down.

I used to enjoy a martini but now when I have my very ocassional one- the vodka doesn't taste right.
Other then that- unfortunately everything tastes TOO good and I have a very healthy appetite because of it.

oops edited to say I take MTX
wanttobeRAfree2008-06-15 09:57:38My allergies have caused my senses to come & go along with my hearing.  I do know that as people age, they lose their sense of smell and taste and that is why they eat more sugary, salty things.  I think there are many causes for this condition, but again, I believe it's my allergies, however I agree that it's most unpleasant.  In fact, it's a pain in the rump!!   I take MTX, Plaquenil, and Enbrel and have definitely noticed that my sense of taste has been effected.  I also notice that I have aversions to foods that I used to really enjoy, especially where vegetables and anything containing garlic are concerned.  I do think it is the meds that cause this, at least for me it is.

ocassional  1  are you sure  I have noticed that my sense of smell is much stronger. I can smell stuff that other people can't. Sometimes the smell of certain foods cooking smell awful and I get a little sick to my stomach. I'm not on MTX or pred. I do have bad seasonal allergies and pet, dust, etc. Don't know if that's why or what. Very, very strange.
