A hen and roster showed up in my yard 4 or 5 weeks ago, husband has been trying to find owners. no one will claim them,  The hen beat up my dog, (lol didn't hurt her)  now we have 9 baby chicks running around the yard.  Husband want to keep them.  What do you feed them without buying 40 lb. bag of food?  Can the owner come back and get them?   I know this is very off topic, just wondering what to do....LOL

Have a great nite
Gee and all they drop off here are cats LOL!How fun!!!  Maybe try calling a petting farm if you have one nearby.  If you don't let me know.  I do and I'll happily make a call for ya. I hope you get some fresh eggs.  The kind without the chickees :) [QUOTE=rusty]A hen and roster showed up in my yard 4 or 5 weeks ago, husband has been trying to find owners. no one will claim them,  The hen beat up my dog, (lol didn't hurt her)  now we have 9 baby chicks running around the yard.  Husband want to keep them.  What do you feed them without buying 40 lb. bag of food?  Can the owner come back and get them?   I know this is very off topic, just wondering what to do....LOL Every year we have a spruce hen in the yard, she has up to 5 chicks and we get to watch them grow up. The funny part is the dog never goes after them, she is the dumbest beagle I've ever seen. The hen and chicks will be out in the yard and Cleo will go outside, take a pee and turn around and come back in?Rusty, that sounds like so much fun!  If you decide to keep them, however, you should create a small house for them, so that they can roost at night away from predators.  Otherwise you will have foxes and coyotes snacking on them in your yard, and that could create a danger for your dog and any other pets.   It's really easy to build a chicken house or roost - but I will caution you there's quite a strong smell that comes from chicken droppings!  You would want to keep it clean, so design it so that it can be easily cleaned.  Google it, and you be sure to come up with some info.

If you don't want to keep them, post them on craigslist.com under the free section and I'm sure someone will come to get them for you.  With the price of eggs being so high, and the popularity of fresh eggs, many people are keeping a couple of chickens nowadays.
fence them in
let them free range and sell the eggs.. this is awesome.

they  shouldnt need that much food, also they will eat some table scraps.

Ive been wishing we could have chickens here in the village  I gotta tell you I would do it in a heartbeat..

then in fall take a few to the processor and you will have organic free range chicken to eat..

sigh I miss my chickens.. In high school I had a flock of bantams..  they used to try and roost in my apple tree, so most nights I would have to climb the tree and get them down and put them in the coops..  silly things..
