Black Bugs Hallucinating? | Arthritis Information

Ok... I am not sure which of my meds is making me "see" black bugs. It is a toss up between Nortriptyline 80mg or Coreg 12.5mg.

Maybe that is why Nortriptyline is called NorTRIPtyline? Anyways...

I take all my meds before going to sleep, been doing it since being RXed them all. I have not seen black bugs crawling on my walls, until I was put on Coreg and my Nortriptyline bumped up to 80mg.

I think it has something to do with I am so tired and my meds are making me sleepy, but I just cannot fall asleep. SO... I see black bugs. I know I am tired and my meds should have all made me fall asleep like hours before seeing the black bugs, but I just cannot fall asleep.

I do not see the black bugs all the time, just when I am really tired, took all my bedtime meds and not fallen asleep.

The lights are off I will stare at the wall and I can see like a army of big black bugs crawling up the wall. I can close my eyes and they will be gone. I can open my eyes back up and no bugs, but if I just stare at the wall for a while I will start to see the bugs marching up the wall again.

I know they are not real bugs, because they are too uniform and I have gotten up and turned the light on before to make sure it was not real bugs. They disappear when the light gets turned on.

Oh and to add to the crazy sleepy hallucinations... I had a scary dream the other day. It was about human like bugs and I do not know what else. But hubby thought I was dying or something because I gasped so loud. He heard my gasp all the way out into the dinning room and came in the room and asked me if I was ok. I was like I was sleeping! He said well you were gasping or something like that.

who knows... not I said the hallucinating loon!I would get to a neurologist if I were you.  It's probably nothing.  You may have some slight visual disturbances which appear as black dots.  Your brain can't make sense of the black dots, so it fills in the "missing information" and you perceive little black bugs. I did a google search, just to ensure that my bosses think I am having hallucinations, if they are looking.  In addition to finding this thread, it seems that Noratrip. can cause hallucinations, although you may have already read that.  Didn't see as much of the same with Coreg. Back to work.Since I've been on RA meds I see things out of the corner of my eye running around...imaginary cats and bugs...LOL

It wouldn't hurt to mention your "army" of bugs to the doctor
I read a loooong time ago that can happen when you have gone long periods without adequate sleep.  Do you see them in your peripheral vision, but when you turn to look full on their's nothing there? You said it only happen when you're really tired, maybe that's all it is.Thanks for the replies.

I figured it was the Nortriptyline. I will have to talk to my RD about it when I go back to her in July.

I just wanted to share and see if anyone else had a similar experience.

KatieG - thanks for googling it. I googled it last night, too.

I will be laying there and stare at the wall, facing it. Then when I blink the "bugs" appear. It is just freaky. The first it happened I freaked and got out of bed to turn the light on and there was nothing. Then a little while later, I still had not fell asleep, they appeared again. I did not freak that time, I just rolled over and tried to go to sleep.

It is some weird crap.
Oh.  I was hoping I solved your problem and all you needed was a good night's sleep. I'm so disappointed.

I've hallucinated too and we decided it was Cymbalta. My boyfriend was still awake on the computer. He heard me talking then heard me open the door to the garage. The whole time I was apologizing to my neighbors for walking into their home instead of mine, but I hadn't been in their home, just dreaming and sleepwalking. It scared him so bad I was at the doc's the next day. First we reduced the dose then I just stopped it because I was still seeing things, mostly lacy patterns on my ceiling.

however.... just the other night I saw my ex hubby's grandmother, then some scary looking guy standing next to Rocky(the boyfriend). I have no idea why I am doing this. I am no longer taking cymbalta.
