A friends mom died of ALS back in 2004. She suffered a lot. What a terrible disease. Thanks for sharing this Pip.I now a guy age 42 who just died from ALS. He was a carpenter/contractor and a volunteer soccer coach. He lasted about 2 years. This is the worse disease I have ever seen. Robs you of everything except your mind. I went to a fund raiser for him. I had not seen him in a few months. I was devastated , upon seeing this man. He has 4 kids. We raised about 17,000 dollars which is probably a drop in the bucket for his family. More awareness about AKLS would be helpfull. Lou Gehrig died I think at age 37 near 60 years ago and we still know nothing about this disease... One of my high school friends has ALS; it's one of the most devastating things I've seen.  She and her husband have 3 young children; their 4-year old has more strength and control than she does. Our parish priest has ALS.  He became a prist after he had become widowed...so we have an unusual priest who is actually a parent and grandparent.  Every Sunday just by being there Father Dan demonstrates a quiet strength and faith that I wish I could emulate.  But watching him deterioate is a sad thingI chaired the local tag day here in my town for ALS.  I'm so glad to hear you all are aware, but not for very good reasons.  It's amazing how so many don't know what ALS is, but if you mention Lou Gehrigs, they "get it". Such a disasterous disease.

If any of you are in the Chicago area, feel free to join us for the Les Turner ALS Walk for Life in September.  I can't "walk it" anymore, but it is a great day, alot of fun for young, old and even the canines. The walk is along Lake Michigan and an amazing day to share and care and laugh and cry.  Phenomenal.  This is our first year walking without our loved one with ALS, he died this past winter.
I'm sorry about your loss.

Hugs and more hugs,

Pip
