Left my shot out too long.... | Arthritis Information
Hi,
I accidentally left my enbrel shot out for 1 hour and 20 minutes instead of the recommended 15 -30. I went ahead and used it, b/c it is soooo expensive.
Anyone else do this in the past? Any regrets or complications or should I be fine?
Nori
Yep, I did it and left it out a hour or more. I took it too and no regrets. I was fine. I also have been moving my day up each week. I was taking it on Monday but this week took it Sunday. Then next week I will take it Sat. Then Friday on and on until I get to take it on Weds. That way my best days will be on the weekend.
That's my plan and I'm sticking to it!
I'm sure you will be ok. I also hold the shot in my hand to warm it to body temp before I inject. Doesn't hurt at all then.
take care
CinDee,
What a relief! I appreciate your response. Especially since the spot where I gave my shot really hurts right now. Worse than usual. There is a huge bruise as well. I noticed the liquid was a little more watery.
I never noticed one day being better than others based on my meds. I noticed you don't take plaquenil or MTX, but do take flexeril. My doctor prescribed that for me to help me sleep, but I didn't really like it. Do you take it for muscles or sleep? I envy your xanax though!!!!

I have a habbit of making a cup of coffee, taking my shot out of fridge and when the coffee is gone, I do the shot. It's always a good temperature and I don't forget to take it.
My memory is the pits so I had to come up with something to make it a routine. Hi Nori
I've left it out up to an hour as well and it was fine. It actually stung less and I figured I had the solution to the sting, so left out the following week for an hour, but no such luck as the sting was back. Oh well - I guess I can handle it for 15-20 seconds. I think someone posted that they did some checking and up to 6 hours is fine to be left out. But - that's just a "I think" so don't hold me to it.

I take Humira....but it's the same situation. I've done that before and it was fine. As long as it hasn't been out in the hot sun or extreme temp; you're fine.I had accidently left it out overnight. I had called Enliven and they told me as long as it was not especially hot (like over 80 degrees if I remember correctly)there should not be a problem. They did say that the same shot can't be left out TWICE like that.
I left my shot out overnight also put it back in the Fridge called Enliven and they said it could be left out for 4 days in room temp. The nurse also would not go and say it would not kill me just that it is supposed to be ok for up to 4 days at room temp. I think for legal reasons she would not say I would be ok. I rutinely leave it out for awhile or I put the cylinder in my mouth to warm it up a little faster. That stuff hurts when going in cold, I won't make that mistake again. hey guys,
thanks for all the feedback. actually, this puts me more at ease for an upcoming vacation where i will have to travel with the shots. I was worried about keeping them cold enough, but it sounds like it doesn't have to be perfect.
Oh, and I am still alive.....

Nori, if you will be traveling with your enbrel, I recommend that you call Enliven Services and ask them to send you a travel cooler. They are free! The cooler is perfectly sized for a box of 4 injections, and it has a freezer pack that keeps it safely cool for a few hours. I added a little ice in a zip lock bag, just to be safe, because I was going on a long road trip (15 hours). It takes a week or so to get it, so you might want to call them a couple of weeks ahead of time.
Have fun on your vacation!
Hi Bizzalou,
Thank you for the advice. I have the purple cooler, but I didn't think to use the 4 pack box to protect the shot. That makes sense. I was wondering about that. I will be gone for 10 days and will only need 1 shot, but I will save a box for traveling. I will probably be away from the fridge for about 12 hours, so I think it will work. It's one of the reasons I thought remicade might be nice, but since enbrel's working I guess I should stick with that.
Take care,
Nori
