I learnt a wonderful lesson tonight.

Got home after catering a cocktail party for 70 (thats what I do and Im grateful my tools ie: my hands are functioning right now
Hubster was in bed. Normal for 10pm. Two 55 kg  Maremma pooches going mental wanting more food, so they get a treat. After a couple of minutes I see our youngest dog ( we rescued him from a Pound 18 months ago) going berserk on his couch in the kitchen.
And I see why! Behind the couch which is against a wall, and does not have heaps of room behind...I spy our cats face with both front legs visible and claws digging into the doggie blanket on said couch. He is having SOOOOO much fun teasing Dalai!! And it was so damned funny to watch.

A year ago I began feeding a bunch of wild /feral kittens outside our  commercial kitchen as their mom seemed to have disappeared. After a couple of weeks only one kitten showed a little interest in human contact and eventually came calling me every day and even rubbed against my legs. I continued to come feed the kittens for 3 months after we left that kitchen for other premises. I was sad on one occasion when I hadnt seen ' my ' kitten for 5 days and was sure he was dead. Then, his head appeared at the hole in the fence one evening! I was delighted and called him. He came out with one leg just hanging off him, obviously broken. I was devastated and called my sister to bring her cat cage and try get him to the Vet.
I still cannot believe how this kitty let me pick him up, put him in cage then get him to the Vet. He let the Vet handle him without a sound or movement. Vet said leg is to be either amputated or pinned, or cat put to sleep. I went for pinned. 00.00 and 4 months recup time in a spare bedroom, we had a cat in our lives again!!

Tonight, this cat with his disability ( his leg is wonky still ) created mayhem and laughter in our house. He teased and taunted. He ran about the house like a demented thing, he batted the pooches as they passed, he leapt in the air after imaginary butterflies ( or something!) and just made us laugh!! And he is now curled up asleep on his favourite cushion after purring in my lap for 15 minutes.
He gives me joy. And it is such an easy simple thing to give, joy! I must never forget that and thank you Mr T ( aka Slash...lol) for your lesson.

And to all that have lasted the distance with this post...thanks for hanging out with us.

Mr T has his own Gorilla but it sure aint running HIS life!! lolol

Lyn....Great story and a lovely way to end your evening by laughing.  I could picture the scene in my mind and you started my day with laughter.

Thanks!

I loved your story and could just picture it all happening.  I have a rescued cat too.  He lived at the vet's office for 4 years after they got him  as part of a very sick litter.  He was unadoptable (they say) because of only having one eye and a crushed in chest.  I took him when my last cat died and have been very happy with him.  Like you, I spend a lot of time laughing at his antics and there is nothing like a purring, kneading cat on your lap to make you feel loved.

We have two rescued cats and they make everyday brighter and better.  Our 3rd cat died 6 months ago at age 15 and was replaced by a Norweigen Forest cat that found us.  He was a kitten and came into our lives about 4 weeks before Top Cat died.

Everyday these two clowns make us laugh and that makes everyday a special day.  Lindy
I'm a little late with this but I loved your story. I have 3 dogs and a kitten - all rescues and two were severly abused. They bring us such joy and happiness, I couldn't imagine a home without them. The two that were abused are so happy here and complete goofs at times. They don't ask for much, just some food, water and lovin'. Oh and lots of snuggles too!
Bless you owiemom for being a rescuer!! I notice there a quite a few of you here  (like Anne and Lin) that rescue and I love you all for that.

Cheers....Lyn
Edited to add the pooch!

LyndeeNZ2008-07-01 05:12:18What a great story and I'm amazed that feral cat "adopted" you.  I used to do volunteer work at my local shelter before we moved and my primary job was to socialize the dogs and cats by play, walking the dogs, petting, etc.  Hey, it was a lousy job, but someone had to do it!   The feral kittens were the toughest and we weren't always successful in getting them to accept human company.  You and your kitty are both very special.

P.S.  Bless your hearts, all of you, for adopting rescues.  We've had a few ourselves and  they make wonderful pets.

My parents have always had purebred dogs they paid an arm and a leg for and I have noticed that my rescues are overall, healthier and stronger than theirs. Not sure if it's the same for everyone, but just something I noticed....I just wanted to see the jumping cat again.
