Watermelons Said to Boost Heart/Immune System | Arthritis Information

Watermelons contain compounds that can benefit the heart and circulatory system and may even provide a Viagra-like lift to the libido, according to Texas A&M researchers.

"The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body," Dr. Bhimu Patil said in a prepared statement, United Press International reported.

Patil and colleagues found that when watermelon is consumed, a phyto-nutrient called citrulline is converted into an amino acid called arginine.

"The citrulline-arginine relationship helps heart health, the immune system and may prove to be very helpful for those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes," Patil said. "Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it."

In addition, Patil said deep-red varieties of watermelon also contain plenty of the antioxidant lycopene, which protects the heart, prostate and skin health, UPI reported.

I saw this on the morning news - everyone is jumping on the "viagra-like" benefits, LOL!  The story I saw indicated that the highest concentrations of these compounds are found in the rinds of the watermelon, but they are currently working to develop watermelons with increased beneficial nutrients in the edible part of the melon - super melons, so to speak.I have been eating a whole watermelon per week for a very long time.  It tastes great, has lots of nutrients and gives me extra water.  Am glad to hear that it has been even better for me than I thought. Bonny2008-07-02 12:41:30Hey, this explains that old saying "Wish I had a Watermelon, Wish I had a watermelon. . ."  Does anyone else remember that one, or am I the only one?  funny!

That was a good cartoon, also, Suzanne.  I am betting the watermelon growers are going to be experiencing a great weekend for sales for the 4th!

I don't remember the Little Rascals thing.  I have no idea where it came from, maybe it was a TV show, but we used to rub bald men's heads and say "Wish I had a watermelon, wish I had a watermelon."
