Last week when I went to the rheumy, he prescribed mtx to add to the many other drugs I take including Humira. I've had a tummy situation so I didn't take it until last night just before bed. I woke up this morning with my fingers and wrists swollen more than ever. Have any of you had this experience? Gets worse before it gets better?

Wendy, I can't remember if I felt worse, but I do know that it will  probably take about a month to start feeling results. that's how it was for me, everyone is different. hope you won't have major stomach issues. the folic acid really helps side effects. good luck.

From what I have heard & read, that is probably coincidental?  I have been on MTX since early March, about 4 months.  It hasn't done anything for me yet, but my response has been atypical, I believe.  It can take up to 6 months to work, but usually just takes a month or two.  FYI, I had some mouth sores at first, but upped my folic acid and changed toothpastes.  Other than that, I wouldn't even know I'm on it, no side effects.  Hope you have the same experience (with quicker results!  )Thank you Katie and janlee. I know it'll take time but I'm sure you both know how it is, I just keep hoping for some kinda miracle that'll make this sh!t go away!!! I was rereading side effects and saw that Prilosec keeps mtx levels high, just happens to be what I take tp protect my tummy. The thing I read suggested Protonix. Protonix just went generic! YAY!Hang in there Wendyr, it can take several months for MTX to kick in.  I found that switching to the injections gave me much better results than the pills, but along with the improvement came more side effects.  I now have chronic skin problems.  Hopefully you'll have few or no side effects and great results from the MTX once it kicks in.  Give it some more time.

Edited to add:  Yes, there are days when I feel a bit worse after my MTX dose and other times where I feel just fine.  I usually just feel crummy for a few hours and then get back to normal.  There's no rhyme or reason to it that I can figure out.
Jesse882008-07-03 09:46:53Jesse88, welcome to my world... no rhyme or reason to anything about RA. UGH!!!!!!!Jesse, what kind of skin problems did the injections give you? I switched to injectable about a year and a half ago and my skin seems to be better than ever and because mtx doesn't pass through my tummy to get where it needs to go, I haven;t had tummy issues either. Could the sking probs be a coincidence? Just like wendy said, no rhyme or reason....Ihave some skin issues also.  My RD said it wasn't an allrgic reaction, I didn't think it was!

I think it's a side effect of the MTX as I've never had these problems before.
