One drs. opinion:

http://gruntdoc.com/2008/07/black-box-warnings-now-officially-useless.html

"Black box warnings used to be for very serious, life-threatening problems in drugs.  Now tendonitis and tendon rupture are life threats, or are so serious they warrant a Black Box?  The elevation of known, well-documented drug side effects to Black Box status dilutes its meaning, and will ultimately require the formation of a new class of warnings."
As someone who suffered an achilles tendon rupture due to Levaquin, I consider this side effect to be very serious.  So I respectfully disagree with this Doc's opinion........Lynn,

When did this occur?  What other meds we're you on at the time?  We're you on Enbrel or Humira too?

Shortly after I was diagnosed with RA...No other meds except MTX.

Lynn492008-07-09 15:45:25yep, MTX is also linked to tendon rupture

Interesting perspective from grunt.doc.

I'll continue to read the black boxes and note that these are possible side-effects of the drug that I'm taking or ready to take.  It doesn't really matter to me if they're included in the black box and aren't "life threatening".  Maybe that's the area that's read more frequently by consumers and the FDA thought that might be the best place to inform the consumer.

Who cares, as long as the information about a serious side effect is listed.  On one hand the pharmas and the FDA are being railed at because they haven't posted all of the side effects.  On the other hand, when they do post them they're being railed against because of where they posted the side effects.  I don't really think anyone cares if it's in the black box or listed under side effects.   Lindy
