MTX Shots Side Effects | Arthritis Information

Hey Hey guys!

I know its been a while, ive been super busy which is good I suppose. I hope everyone is doing well and hanging in there. I went to my RD last week and she started me on MTX shots, ive been kinda scared of starting this med. I dont know why, could be because last time I took it orally it gave me HORRIBLE side effects. I was wondering what are some of the beginning side effects of taking MTX? Any warnings I should look for? Please help me out and help me not be so scared about taking this new med! Also I take enbrel shots, should I take these on the same day? Im not sure. :) Thanks again guys!

Hi!! I was on the oral MTX and got so sick I ended up in the hospital. I now take the injections. .6cc is all I can manage. I still get small mouth sores and I am usually sick for 2 days after. However, I don't mean sick like the oral. Just queasy and tired. I can deal with it.

I take my MTX Wednesday p.m. along with a sleeping pill so I sleep through the worst of it. Usually by Saturday I feel better.

Make sure to warm the MTX to room temperature first (about 1/2 hour) and let your skin dry from the alcohol swab before injecting.

I have found injecting to be no big deal. It doesn't hurt at all. I think you can do this. Really the side effects are there for me, but manageable I guess. I don't plan anything for the next 2 days except quiet stuff.

Now, everyone is different, so I know others will post as well.

Good luck with it.!!

Jealousy,    I will be looking forward to hearing how it goes for you.  I also cannot tolerate mtx but have not tried the injections.  I am on Enbrel but it is not enough.  I am considering all my options.  I hope it works out for you.

I've been taking mtx injections for about 2 years. I got very sick at first but when I started taking folic acid most of the sickness went away. They had to cut my dose back to .5 cc's which is half of what I had been taking. I'm still very tired from it for a day. I also take zofran, an antinausea med about a half hour before the shot so I don't feel any nausea. I inject it myself and much to my surprise I don't mind doing that at all.  I find that the mtx really helps me a lot. I get very achey when I cheat and don't take it. All that being said I understand that most people don't have any problems with it.

Good luck

Hi there,

I am not taking the shots but am taking it orally.  I am 22.5 mgs (8 pills).  It really made me sick the first few times,

I take mine on Friday evening before bed so that it doesn't affect my work.  I am usually pretty tired the next day... sometimes have a headache and nausea, but it usually only lasts for 1 day, and I really believe the mtx helps me.

I wasn't able to get the shots because when I started, I guess there was a shortage of them, but am going to ask my RD at my next appt.

I hope things go well for you with the mtx!!!
