what a day... | Arthritis Information

So it started out good... I had a spa gift certificate appt. scheduled this morning for reflexology of hands & feet plus parrafin treatments of both. Who with RA could ask for anything more?

Yesterday my husband was complaining of  gastro problems- loose bowels.

After checking into the spa felt  abdominal cramps, popped some immodium ever present in my purse on  spa camera.

First half of the reflexology my stomach made loud gurgling noises making me unable to relax. Got over it. It was enjoyable and relaxing.

After- was going to birthday shop for oldest- daughter- birthday Monday. Something said Go Home.
Went home.
Started playing with 2 new kittens- working cats for mouse infested farm garage. Heard phone ringing- did not bother to run into house....

Cell rings. It's my youngest son. Can you pick me up at Acme? I passed out twice.. Why!!! I don't know? I will be right there!!!!!!!!!
Get to the Acme, see an ambulance with flashing lights in front of the store. Jam the car into park and run out. 2 Acme employees run towards me. Is that ambulance for my son I stammer? Yes they say he is OK but he passed out 3 times and his BP is very low they are taking him to the hospital. The police officer wants to talk to you. Do ypu want to ride with him or follow?
I will ride. Do not even know how to get to the hospital at this point let alone try to follow.

Get in the ambulance. Son 's lips are white as snow, he is on oxygen, BP was 60/50. Mame- does your son look pale compared to normal? PLEASE!
Hook him up to an IV while driving. Don't know much about it but the nurse at the hospital who removed it said it was a 16. It looked huge! At 16 he was shaking and held out his hand for me to hold before they inserted it and bled like a MF when they took it out when we were discharged.

All tests were inconclusive. We were in the ER all day. EKG showed some kind of right ventricular abnormality that can show up in a few of all boys his age that may or not mean nothing. Most likely nothing. Blood tests all normal. Was training as a cashier but not actually on the register...learning the computer with 4 other trainees. Not stressful at all per him. All of a sudden he felt faint so asked to go to the bathroom where he planned to sit down. Passed out before he got here. Then 2 more times. Ate breakfast, sugar OK. ER doctor said sometimes just happens from being on feet, dehydration, boys that age growing fast may need more fluid , etc...

Husband was furious with me for not following the ambulance instead of driving..why did I do that? Our son needed me I said, and yes I was too distraught to drive. Called me twice at the hospital to ask when we could be picked up. Second time said he was wasting his whole day in the house waiting.. Asked what he would like me to do. Be more forceful he said. Have you ever been in an ER. Nothing was out of the norm of waiting for a non- emergency.
When he picked us up he was so nasty to me. Said what was the conclusion? Inconclusive. Well, what was the point to the ER visit? Just a way to make money! Acme called I said, the paramedics felt he needed to go. Well- they can say what ever they want- it's up to you to decide. Well his BP was low his lips were white he needed to be checked out!
When we got home and son was outside playing with 2 new kittens we got I asked- why are you so nasty to me? What are you talking about he says. PLEASE- you are toxic I tell him. Do you know how you must have made your son feel? What are you talking about he says. Toxic- oh I read about that somewhere- you are toxic. No I am not I said. I walked away. He changed his tune later and I further discussed what led to the ambulance ride and ER visit and he seemed to get it...
Another silver lining was I texeted my other  older two kids about the situation and they were very responsive to their younger brother. Surprisingly so tho- my middle son who doesn't appear to be close at all with his bro called back immediately to find out more and said tell him I hope he feels better and call me with an update....
Anyway any relaxation I gain is gone. My boss is vacationing next week and I am second in commmand. I have a plant tour and other stress producing events to deal with next week. My onset began during the same in November. Anyone that prays....I can use your prayers.....

wanttobeRAfree2008-07-13 04:42:51  Some 20 years ago I  had to rush to ER with my 3 year old and I do you know just how stressful it can be to have a child in the ER.   Your son is going to be fine now I trust.

I will definately pray for you.

Thanks- and I completely forgot to complain about my own RA complications... the AC was so cold that me who already cannot tolerate AC got achey shoulders - I had the hospital blanket wrapped around me  for four hours- son was hot..... Sorry you had such a rough day.  Hopefully tomorrow will be 100% better for you. I can totally relate to the cold AC. In our office the ladies always have the AC at 40 below or something close it seems.  So I always have to wear a heavy cumbersome jacket just to stay warm and ache free. Ugh! ! me too! LOL! Have a woman 10 years younger- shouldn't be close to menopause blowing fans so her office is like the windy city of Chicago! Me at 47 have a jacket on and both AC vents shut tight in my office??????wannabe...you did the right thing. you cannot put a dollar amount on your sons health and life. kids can cardiac arrest and they do. i'm glad he is ok. huggs. loriYikes! Well, there are 9 women in our office area the majority way younger than menopause and they are the ones with desk fans on top of the already icy AC. The young lady who sits across from me had her fan even when she left the room and all the icy air was blowing in me. So one day I politely asked her if she could face it her way and not let it osiclate my way and could she please turn it off when she left. It seemed like I  was asking for something awful and was a huge inconvenience for her. She did it though. Now If I can just get that AC back into the 80's I may thaw out sometime soon and can put my coat away. *grin*

Wanttobe-We just had a friend whose son went through the exact same thing.  He even went to the nearest children's hospital, where they determined that it was this syndrome that young, active men exhibit.  Boys who are athletic are even more at risk for this happening, and I guess they just outgrow it.

By the way men can be insensitive jerks sometimes, can't they!

I have to look up when his last physical was. I think it's about time for one and I will feel better after another doctor checks him out as well.

Now I just have to get through the work week with my boss being out.
Sounds like a rough day. I hope that is not typical around your house. J/K I would stay freaked out for a while just worrying. Sorry, wanttobe... that's frightening, I know.

My middle son, age 22, just had the same thing happen... we went through all kinds of cardiac testing to have the dr tell us that it is a vasa vagal syncope...

When my son, Zac, passed out... and he did it three times in a short period... he immediately awakens upon hitting level ground...
and if he gets up too quickly afterward, down he goes again.

There's nothing wrong w/ them.. just have an overactive vagal nerve.  .... odd, but true

read this little article from Harvard med:  http://www.hmiworld.org/hmi/issues/July_August_2003/around_fainting.html

I knew about this because my sister has it... and so does my ex, Zac's dad.

good luck to you and your son.
Babs - Thanks so much for those links! It really helped explain things! His discharge papers actually did have that term listed but no one explained it to me.
I am making an appointment for him to have a physical- just to be safe.
