Racing Heart..meds??? | Arthritis Information

Hi all! Just want to ask if any of you have had your pulse rate up on any meds. Been to the pharmacy today to get some cough syrup as I have an awful chest right now with sore throat and all that stuff.  Anyways, I asked the pharmacist what I could use and also asked him if my meds could cause this elevated pulse. He said no, it was likely to be from reflux/indigestion or whatever. Ummmmm, ALL day?? lolol

Any thoughts? My meds are listed below plus I am on a BP med and a diuretic. BTW, this has been happening since I started this journey.

TIA!

Lyndee, has your doctor investigated this?  If not call him/her and get an appt.  Go to your primary care and not your RD.  There is a possibility that Pred. might do this.  Don't know about Plaq.  My HR is usually between 80-90 because of my thyroid and meds I take for it.

Have you started Tai Chi yet?  I've been going once a week and I hate to admit it but the 80 year olds are more flexible than I am, it's embarrassing.  LIndy
Do you have a fever along with this terrible chest and sore throat? Dextrmethorphan, common ingredient in cough syrups can cause elevated heart rate so can psuedoephedrine, found in sudafed.pred can cause the problem but you really need to get it checked out by your doctorYou do need to get this checked out.  A hyperactive thyroid can cause this, high blood pressure, and heart arythmias can cause this.  Don't ignore it!That is what my problem is, too.... the rapid pulse. No one knows why, they have all done a lot and still I have a rapid pulse anywhere from 100-136 and that is while at rest. My BP is good now, with BP meds, but the pulse will not go away.

None of my dr's has said it could be the pred, but they all do not say much of anything either.

I have what feels like reflux, my throat kinda burns when I burp up and then the rest of the day after that my throat feels like it has hot sauce on it. I told my GP, he just nodded his head. Come to think of it, that reflux started about the same time my BP got high and this rapid pulse crap too.

I know what you mean about trying to go to sleep when your heart is pounding, and your whole body vibrates from the blood pumping.

much hugs to you.
Joonie, have they checked your thyroid?  That's what my thyroiditis was originally diagnosed as - acid reflux!  As the thyroid got attacked by a virus, it caused difficulty swallowing and pain, and rapid heart beat.Yep, been to a thyroid dr and all, and not my thyroid so they say. BUT... I do still have 3 goiters on the right side of my thyroid, which are going to be drained. BUT Thyroid Dr said those would not cause rapid pulse, like GP thought it would... so... visits to more doctors and more bloodwork and more needles... Take care of yourself.  Hope this improves.

I sometimes experience that when I lay down to sleep... but that's usually after running around.. getting the dogs all out.. walked around the circle..then all unleashed and in kennels... putting things away.. carrying a laundry basket upstairs. getting my stuff ready for work the next day.. feeding the cats..  getting their water jug filled.. making sure the house is locked up.. all lights off... putting in another load of laundry to be switched over in the morning...

(bending over repeatedly is not a good thing for me )

sometimes I wonder how concerned about this I should be???
man, babs... I just got tired and all sweaty just reading all that!

Yeah, the bending over is way over rated

I have this too, dunno why, never had it before RA. Let me know when you find out what it is!![QUOTE=joonie]man, babs... I just got tired and all sweaty just reading all that!

yep.. BEND!!  or things dont' get done.. I have all that to do myself cause my husband works out of town M-F.. and I hate it :(

If anyone finds any research about this fast beat issue.. I'd love to see it..

psuedoephedrine in decongestants of any type made my Dr. freak out!  My pulse was at 138!  After I stopped taking that stuff it went down to 84.

How long have you been on pred?  I was on it for two years just fine, then WHAM!  I started having all kinds of problems, including diastolic dysfunction and a racing pulse rate.  I'm now weaning off the pred (down to 5 mgs) and the heart rate is slowing down.

Another thought?  Any anxiety/stress going on?  (I know, I know...just living with RA can be stressful.)  Both anxiety and stress will increase the heart rate.  As mentioned above, it's always best to check in with your doctor regarding an new and troubling symptoms.

I hope things settle down for you soon.

Robin

Hey everyone, thanks for your input here.
LinB....I havent started Tai Chi yet as the classes start twice yearly meaning you cant just jump in anytime. Darn it!! Im sure you will bend like a willow soon so keep us posted as to how you go with it and the benefits.

I had spoken with my GP about my heart rate a week or so ago. All she gave me was an enigmatic smile and a " its nothing" kinda spiel. Actually, I left the office feeling slightly neurotic!! I will see where it goes from here and for sure I will go back if it doesnt settle down. Just need to say that I specifically asked for a cough medicine without pseudoephedrine so alls well there.  Thanks again for all the wise words everyone....you are gems.

Joonie...hugs to you and I sure hope you get a break from everything real soon. I cant imagine having lived with this since childhood.

Cheers....Lyn  I can't take ephedrine.

Hope you get the right treatment, Lyndee.

Prednisone can cause this. I had terrible troubles with this side effect when I was on 100 mg. per day.  This high dose was for lymphoma not the RA.

Two things helped. Taking the prednisone in the morning (I couldn't settle down and sleep at all,  I was getting only 1 hour sleep per night, it was awful) and I got a drug called ATIVAN to help me sleep. You might try benedryl or "simply sleep".

Prednisone can cause anxiety.

I also found that relaxation techniques really helped. Slow breathing, etc.
