Swollen feet can't walk | Arthritis Information

Well guys, I made the fatel mistake of going to Wal-Mart today to do some needed shoping. My feet have been bad lately and a couple of nodles on both feet. My toes are curled under which hurts bad anyway, but I decided to go to the store. By the time I got home, my feet were twice their size and my ankles and knees were swollen as well. I tried to hobble around the yard and in my shed to do some art work and poetry but had to give that up to. OUCH!

Does anyone else go through this with RA? Or is it just me?
It's not just you.....I've done it and I'm sure lots of people have over done it. If I go to Wal-mart by the time I limp back to the car, I'm done, stick a fork in me. LOL It's hard to gauge when you over do it. I'm still trying to figure it out. Now I go to the little hometown stores It's closer and they open up the end of my cart and scan the items and someone bags them and takes and puts them in the car. Now if I can just get them to come home with me, put my stuff away and cook me dinner,I'll have it made. LOL
I hope you feel better tomorrow.
Thanks Cindee! That's what I felt like. stick a fork in me, now I'm done for the rest of the day. I hate this stuff!
You stay well dear and take it easy! Hugs to you!

I'm with you Lostpoet - My feet tend to hit me harder than any other part of my body if I over-do it.  Feel like an old lady sometimes the way I hobble.

Cat - do you use Simon Delivers?  I thought I heard that they were shutting down and wondered about the people that need this type of service. I'm sure that there are others that offer the service, so hope you're not stuck having to get everything at the store.

Hope everyone has a "happy feet" day
I've been there!!!  I've had our Acme deliver groceries when my husband's working out of town...(Totally agree about the produce though...yuck they pick crap out for me!!)

I'm feeling so much better that I can do the grocery store AND the produce stand... and have slight swelling and just a little added pain..

I hope you find something that gives you relief as I have

Take good care of yourselves.
LP- When my feet and ankles swelled up and would not go down I got the advice to wrap them up in ace bandages and elevate them above hip level. It worked when nothing else did.

Hope you are feeling better today!
Every time I have to go to Walmart I get anxious.  The walk from the long parking lot to the store is a killer.  Luckily, my Walmart is the greatest.  As soon as I get in the greeter gets me a riding cart or if one isn't available they have me sit down until they can get me one.  Then if I need more groceries than the riding cart can hold they send someone with me to shop and help me.   If I don't use a store employee it seems everyone in the store is willing to help me and are so sweet that one day I broke down in tears at their kindness.  When I get to the check out counter they help me there and someone takes my groceries to the car for me.  I don't know what I would do without them.Even though I'm new to RA, it has always been my feet that have hurt me the most.  If I'm on them all day with little rest, I can barely walk the next morning when I wake up.  My current meds are helping a little, but not enough to take away that foot pain.  Feel better!    ~JodieHey gang, I just wanna encourage folks to use those electric scooters when necessary, that's why they are there and ain't it great more stores have them.  Why be embarassed?  Other customers could care less, they're preoccupied w/their own shopping or problems.

Less pain, more energy, using a scooter can conserve your energy, maybe minimize the RA from acting up, so you can go home and still be able to do all the things you need to or want to do. My complaint is that some are just tooooo slow, wish they were a little zippier.

I suppose I'll ditch the pride thing next time I go to Wally World and use a scooter. Thanks guys!

I don't have a need to use a scooter- but in case I ever do- How hard are they to drive? I would probably be knocking people down and any displays in the aisles LOL!

There are different kinds of scooters, but they are all pretty easy to maneuver, and a store person should be available to show you how they work.  Some don't take the turns real tight, so you might bump a rack in a store with narrow aisles, but I haven't taken out too many shoppers.  I sorry, lostpoet. I struggle with the wal-mart fiasco just about everyday, except it is not my feet that bother me as much as my swelled knees and ankles. I am not much into riding the scooter things, because there is this people greeter at wal-mart and he is in a wheel chair, I always feel bad about getting on one with him seeing me for some reason. But I know he knows I can not walk well, but still... I am able to walk, more like creep along.

I have recently tried to do the scooter thing, but none worked, so I found the bench and sat there until hubby was done.

Then last night, rain storm... the scooters were left outside in the parking lot. They brought one in but it was soaked and I did not see me asking the man in the wheelchair to wipe it down for me so I could use it. Nope was not going to happen.

Hubby had gotten one of those carts that has the blue seat thing attached for kids to sit in and ride. Well... my right leg was killing me and I just could not walk anymore then where I was standing. So... I made son get in the shopping cart and I climbed up and wiggled my way under the handle and sat on the 2 blue seat thing. Grant it... I only was sitting on a half a seat and the other half of me was hanging off, but my right leg was not hurting as bad. Hubby pushed me and son around wal-mart and people stared and laughed, but I was not in horrible pain. But after 20mins of sitting like that my right leg, the side that was hanging off and proped up on the other seat, has fallen asleep. So I got off and walked to the bench and waited for hubby.

See the cart below? That is what I climbed up and sat in and hubby pushed me around.
Joonie, I can't figure out how you squeezed yourself into that thang, must have been uncomfortable.

Here's something to consider, its a fold and go transport chair.  I have one, ordered it online for , no tax, no shipping, delivered to my door.  Lightweight - about 25 lbs.  Comes in handy for me, as I can't walk very far, but, if you're going shopping and need to buy a bunch of stuff, you'd need someone to push you in the chair and someone to push shopping cart.  Take care.

Oh, they have wheel chairs at wal-mart. Not really ideal for me since my son is 3 and hubby pushes the buggy. I guess I could always be pulled along behind in the wheel chair?

Oh I saw this lady like speeding down the aisle, and was wondering why her hair was blowing in the wind. She had one of those rolling walkers and was rolling along. She had a pink cast on her leg, and the leg with the cast was set on the seat of the rolling walker and she pushed it along with her other leg. I mean she was doing more than speed walking, she was plain out speeding!

This is a rolling walker.

I just went to my rheumy today and she tells me that my feet and ankles being red and swollen is water retention.   They're so tight, I have nodules all up my legs, and I have a hard time getting up in the a.m. because of it.
I'll see my pcp on Monday and I'm to ask him about giving me a water pill and I'm supposed to wear my compression hose whenever I'm up.
I don't know if mine is the same as yours.  Yours might be coming from a completely different source, but I do hope this helps someone.
Hugs,
Chris
Thanks for sharing chris! I hope the water pill will help you out. Do you have the sloshing fluid feeling when you walk? I had that when I first started my BP meds.
I was embarassed to use those riding carts at first also.  But, after the first time I can't shop without them.   It really makes a difference.  Don't feel bad about using them.  I see all kinds of people using them.   Especially obese people and the elderly use them all the time.  People do look at me like why do you need one but then they see my cane.   All I know is I couldn't shop comfortably without those carts.  Once you use them you will wonder how you ever got around without it.   They are really easy to drive.  I was afraid of running over everyone also at first but it's really easy.
My legs & feet swell also...
The Dr. writes an Rx for Juzo compression stocking- to the knee...
It keeps the swelling down & allows me to go to the store once a week...
Also, have you used the store go-carts? This is a life saver when it's bad...
Peace to you lostpoet...
Thanks critter. I will give it a shot with the go carts next time I go. I see my RD on the 5th of August and will ask about the compression stockings. Thanks again!
