pain with a burn | Arthritis Information

I'm OK today hooray!

But last night out of the blue- had not done anything streneous, did not bump it, etc. My right ankle felt like someone kicked me real good! It was that kind of pain- not what I am used to with RA. It wasn't like an ache- it felt bruised ( I have had that feeling in my shins but not this painful)and it also had a burning sensation??? It was the most intense pain I have felt since I got "better".
Has anyone had that before? I took some tylenol and put icy hot on it and went to bed. I was disappointed because I thought - here it comes a flare...I'm going to wake up tomorrow and I'm going to be in trouble again. I had planned to drop another mg of prednisone today and thought that idea was shot to hell.

Woke up fine!

I'm down to 4 mgs everybody!
Great job on the prednisone decrease! Hope you can get off it completely.

It is probably from you decreasing the pred that is causing some of these weird things, because the pred could have been masking it. But do not take my word for it, get it seen about if it presists.

Good Luck with the pred!with burning pain you might want to avoid something like icy hot.  You also might try an anti inflammatory instead of tylenol, unless you are already on a prescription one.  Your ankle may have been flaring putting pressure on a nerve
Glad you are feeling better thoug
Oh yeah...at 5 mg of pred you might think about slowing the taper down a bit.  instead of completely dropping 1 mg you might try alternating 5mg and 4 before moving entirly to the lower dose.  The lower you go the bigger the % drop is
Thanks for the responses!

Yeah- I've been very afraid that the prednisone has been masking things. My doctor for the longest time kept telling me- don't be over confident- you have severe RA and it is just the prednisone that is making you feel so good. But now that I have gotten down so far and I am still doing good he stopped saying it.

I am banned from anti inflammatories because of the prednisone by my doctor- I would love to take Advil instead of Tylenol. (Another reason to be anxious to get off of it)

LOL- yeah putting icy hot on something that feels likes it's burning sure does sound stupid now! It's just a habit for me I guess- you have pain- get the icy hot out!

My doctor did mention I could do the 5 one day 4 another taper....if I start feeling crappy I will try that. It's just that I have my 0 day already marked on my calendar....

More than anything else since I've gotten down to a loss dose of prednisone is that I feel sad a lot. I don't know if it's a coindence or it's something else going on with me...

good for the increase!!! I hope things continue to be positive.

Even w/ your 0 day in sight.. can't you do the 4 then 5 thing for a few days.. and then do four... then go four and three...??

IDK.. I haven't ever taken pred long term..
A lot of the pain in my hand, I would describe as burning pain...

SnowOwl- you hit the nail right on the head. Since this RA I have been having a lot of you only have one life moments... so why do you allow so & so to treat you like this,  why do you always put yourself last, is this the way you want to spend the rest of your life.... I want to blame it on meds but I think I just lost my ability to push things down.

Katie G mine felt like a burn you would get from a fire- is that the sensation you have?

you might speak to your doctor again about an anti-inflammatory now that you are so low on the pred.
You are still dropping 1mg over 2 weeks its just that instead of dropping 1 full mg the first week you are dropping it by 1/2 mg week 1 and 1/2 mg week 2
So then week 3 I would start doing 4 one day and 3 the next?right....you're just slowing things down a bit to lessen the stress on your bodyHi wantobe, For pain and swelling in my ankles I use this stuff called Bio Freeze. My brother sent it to me. It works wonders for me.I've seen that LP- thanks for letting me know it's a keeper!
