Question On Swelling | Arthritis Information

My fingers and wrists tend to stay swollen just about all the time now and more so at night. I have not worn a watch or ring in months because just feeling something around my fingers/wrists causes it to feel like the circutlation is being cut off. There are days when even long sleeve shirts do this. Just wondering if anyone else has this kind of experience with swelling? Thanks

Carolinagirl,  Yes, I have experienced that and had all my rings cut off
at one time. I still get fat fingers occasionally, that is part of having Ra.
Night time was the worse for me also but now have that under control
most of the time with Enbrel , Arava and Predizone.
Most of my flares are now in my knees and ankles.
yes, I get that also. Just commented the other day that its a good job I don't wear rings as they would never fit.
THanks Maimi..this is good and bad news at the same time!  Knowing my symptoms match others helps me to feel less crazy as I have yet to get a doctor to acknowledge whatever is going on as anything but "undifferentiated pain". I guess the bad news is that being undiagnosed, I still hold on to some small hope that I will wake up one morning nad this will all go away. (that hope dwindles more and more each day, but it is still there!) i no longer wear any jewelry just can not stand the way it feels.   when i was getting remicade friday a young lady getting treatment also told me she can't stand for anything to touch her skin.   i notice she even had her tee shirt on inside out so the stitching did not rub her.Shannon you might look into getting some resting splints.  they keep your hands and wrists in a neutral position over night allowing them a bit of time to recoverI no longer wear my watch because it doesn't fit on my wrist.  None of my rings fit either, as they are all a size 7 and now I need a size 9, from swelling.  I 'm with buckeye on the splints.  I had the same problem and the wrist splints did help to some extent.I had my rings resized to fit.  It was worth the price and you know why......wearing my rings made me feel better.  Different fingers but same rings.  Your rings are familiar and you love them so why not still wear them.  Start with your favorite ring and have it resized and then do one a month until they're done.  I've had 3 rings resized to bigger twice and made smaller twice.  I'm ready to take my wedding rings in and have them made smaller once again.  It will make a difference in how you feel about your hands.  LindyMy fingers are the worst. The swelling just won't go away. The left hand usually looks and feels worse than the left. I have put all my rings away. My wrists are not to bad but at times they do swell. Next visit with Rd I would like to ask about this. I am assuming this  means there is still inflamation going on and am wondering if this means the meds aren't working or they just need more time to kick in. Or is this just normal in RA. I use splints when sleeping when my hands or wrists swell and ache.  You might try putting ice bags on them as this helps bring the swelling down.   It makes the swelling go down for me.  I also use ice on my ankles when they swell and it helps so much.I had my wedding ring cut on the anniversary of my wedding :). Then we bought another one, adjustable, big and confy. Now the swelling is gone (it lasted about a month). I can't stand rings or bracelet or necklaces on me anymore either. I never could wear a watch because it always would quit working after a couple of hours  (God's honest truth)! Even a watch I had on a necklace quit working. Some one told me that I have too much magnesium in me which made them quit????? LOL I'm too weird!

I didn't wear my rings for the first 6 months and had an extra link or two added to my watch, but once my meds kicked in the swelling did go down and the rings are back on and the watch is loose.   So, I guess I would just say to be patient if you haven't been treating very long.

Shannon,
My fingers and palms have been swollen for three months and very painful.  I also have two nodules in right palm, about middle between creases which noone can tell me for sure what it is.  I had two cortisone shots in nodules and swelling even went down in fingers...for 24 hours, and then they were back to the way the way they were before.  My wrists hurt so bad I cant lift anything heavy at all (like a pot off stove, etc.)  I sure feel your pain and if you get anything that fixes it please let us know cause I have just about given up.
Yes,I suffer from swollen hands and fingers, but it has improved since I have been on Enbrel. When it they act up I apply ice, which helps a bit.
