cortisone destroyed tissue around injection site | Arthritis Information

I have had several cortisone injections since I was diagnosed with RA in 2004, and the last two I've gotten have left "dents" at the injection site. The dents started out small but grew to about an inch and a half in diameter and pretty deep. My RD said the cortisone can destroy fat tissue but it should resolve with in a year. The year is about up and they are still there in my hip. He also said he has never seen anyone with two! Has anyone else experienced this? i hven't experienced it but have heard that it a rare possibilityMy daughter had to have a cortizone shot years ago.  She has a "dent" in her hip...well more like her butt cheek.  I don't think it will ever go away.  I'm just glad it's in a place that nobody will see....and she better keep it that way! LOL.

I asked the doc. he said that it's no big deal and it will probably be that way forever.
Never had this happen w/my cortisone shots in my knee.  Hmmm, maybe a tatoo on it to camouflage it or near it to distract from it.    Just a thought . . . . .I've had the shots in both knees and 3 shots in my feet with no problems, however the doctor is reluctant to give me a shot in my (very painful) shoulder, because I might be susceptible. The dents are very noticeable. I would call them deforming even, because if I wear anything clingy like yoga pants, I can see the changed landscape! My rear is not where I accumulate fat-- so it is gross that I can feel all the way to the muscle tissue!

Tammi Schlotzhauer in Living with RA gives some warning about cortisone shots.  They should not be given more often than every 4 months.

I was offered one for my elbow but refused.  Just don't like shots.

I wonder if they can do fat injections to fill in the dents like they do for wrinkles?I was wondering if they could fill in the dents! Probably would cost a fortune. That's interesting that you aren't supposed to have the shots less than 4 months apart.

OMGoodness Yes!  I had a cortisone shot in my wrist in Feb 08 for the first time and my wrist in indented right in the middle where they injected!  I was never told this may happen but boy I notice and everyone else does.  I am glad to know though because I so won't get this done anywhere else but the wrist now.

I wonder if I had injections in my chubby cheeks if I could get the dimples I always wanted?
