Max out on MTX?? | Arthritis Information

So I had an appointment with my paid dr. yesterday. After he injected my sternum...oh joy, we sat and had one of our chats. He mentioned a point when I would max out on Mtx. I had never heard of this before. Basically you body can only take so much in a lifetime. He wasn't sure of the exact amount and had assumed that I knew about this from my RD.

Has anybody else heard of this? I started it at 19 and I turn 32 this week so that is a long time....So I tried to edit and it won't let me....That would be Pain dr. not Paid dr.

Of course, as much as I do owe them, that would make sense too...Hi Rebecca, don't think you can max out on how long you've been on MXT.  There are people that have been on it for years and years.  You do max out at about 25mg. weekly.  Anything above that won't do any good if 25mg isn't helping.  Ouch on that sternum injection....hope you're doing better.  LindyI found one site that mentioned 4g over a life time???? That doesn't seem right. 1000mg=1g

My father-in-law has been on 15-20 mg many years (I'm guessing at least 20 yrs) with no problems. I'd ask the RD, sounds like the other dr might not know what he is talking about!

there used to be a concern, becasue of the cancer doses,  of a max amount.  We used to have to get a liver biopsy after being on the MTX for a long time at certain doses.  Repeated studies have now shown that the risk of permant liver damage is not high.  So now you don't have to have a lver biopsy unless tests are showing repeated concerns and you can take the med for some time.  I took it for 18 years many of them at 25mg+ per weekBy max out I think he means it starts not working. That seems to happen with all the RA meds. Not max out by dose because I am on 40mg but that your body adapts to it and it no longer works. It happens frequently for the TNFs and that is maybe 5 to 8 years but I thought MTX was around 15 years. It also doesn't happen to everyone.

Love the Paid doctor part.you take 40mg a week?I've been on mtx for 20 yrs, and it still works, cuz if I skip a shot or two, I notice the difference -- swelling, pain and stiffness.

Like Buckeye said, in the early days when mtx was first started being used for RA, there was the possible need for a liver needle biopsy.  I wasn't happy when I heard about that, but I never had to have one, my labwork was always okay, and over time I guess they found mtx doses at levels for RA didn't require such a test.  Thank Gawd.

So I'm currently on .6 cc, also take enbrel, have labwork every 2 months, and so far, no problems.  I try to keep meds to a minimum if I can help it, and don't drink alcohol, so my old liver doesn't get overworked.

I was on MTX for 8 years, also placquenil, arthrotex.
they stopped working, now I am on Enbrel, which I inject my self once a week. Thank god it is working, most of the time I am pain free and suffer no stiffness in the mornings but do suffer from swollen ankles, have tried taking water pills, which is not helping, any idea's on this?
Yes, I am taking 40mg or 1.6 cc, I hate the 3cc needle. Its so big and the needle is thick. I have started to really get sick so I am dropping down to 30mg till I see the doctor.
