I have had a kidney transplant going on 6 yrs, Diabetic type 1, Lupus sle and have been taking prednisone for more than 15yrs and taking tons of other medications. I had a DEXA scan done and found out today I have Osteaporosis.

The nurse, from my regular family docotor had told me this and I asked if I should be taking any calicum supplements and she said he had nothing wriiten down and that lots of people have  osteaporosis. I am assuming it was a low score or he would had done something?

I hurt real bad in the thoracic area, but I did not tell them this today when I got the great bad news. I guess because the nurse made it sound like it was no big deal.  I wander should I let my nephrologist know about the DEK scan result or just wait until next month for my appointment with him.

Sorry about all this mess at one time, don't know if I should worry or not?
Hello, I too am new to this Osteoporosis section but I'm also a member of the Polymyalgia Rheumatica site. I have been taking Prednisone for 2 1/2 years. Dexa scan also showed Osteoporosis  2 years ago and I took bone building drugs ( Fosamax, Actonal, Evista ect) without sucess because I have eosphageal problems from taking NAIDS for years for arthritis.
I now have a very painful fracture at T10. I now take Strontium Ranelate to help with bone loss and I tolerate this quite okay. Its in a powder mixed in water.

I am telling you all this because I wished I had pushed harder to find something before I got a wedge fracture, as they call it.

Pred is a known calcium depleting drug, have you been prescribed bone building meds?
There is no low score for Osteo...When its Osteo is as low as you go!
Your nurse is way out of line just fobbing you off.

YES, you should tell your family doctor about your pain and do not wait until you see your nephrologist next month. You need an Xray... a dexa can not diagnose a fracture.
Your nurse sounds negligent for just brushing you off! Being told you have Osteoporosis is frightening. Not a medical term, I just know I was scared when I got the fracture.
You sure have been given a lot of bad news to cope with previously and this is yet another to deal with and get help with medication ect.
Lildeb this is a good place to get information and vent if you want. Lets know how you are doing. Lyn x
Thanks, The nephrologist wants me to take the calcium pills daily and ask my post kidneyt transplant team in December whether to put me on a presciption drug for the osteo.  I like to be weened down off the prednisone as well. I am going to write me a list of questiont to ask them.

Is there a list of medications that contribute to osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. Men as well as women are affected by osteoporosis, a disease that can be prevented and treated.
