High Calcium Levels | Arthritis Information

Hi Everyone,  before I was dx with RA, I was dx with Osteoporosis some years back and was taking calcium supplements to help also am on Fosamax.  My RD took me off the supplements because my calcium levels were high, I never thought too much about it then, but now since been on this forum and checking my blood results. Was wondering if anybody had this problem or know why this happens. My Calcium level last week was 2.71 and my GP doesn't know why. Any info would be great. And thanksHi Rockin' Annie,

I have been researching this because I recently had a slightly elevated calcium level. Apparently it *can* result from a problem with the parathyroid glands. My doctor did a test of parathyroid hormone (pth) and mine was also slightly elevated, so she checked my vitamin D. It was low, and she said that could be the cause of the elevated calcium and pth. I am supplementing Vitamin D and will have my levels checked again next week.  If you google hyperparathyroidism or hypercalcemia you will find some info.  BTW, this is not related to thyroid problems, the parathyroids only control the amount of calcium in the blood, but they are located near the thyroid gland, hence the name.  One of the parathyroids (there are 4)  can get a benign tumor called an adenoma which causes it to overproduce PTH, which makes the blood calcium go up.  Many people have no symptoms and the problem is only discovered when calcium is elevated in routine bloodwork. Osteoporosis is one of the signs of this problem, althought hyperparathyroidism is not the only thing that could cause osteoporosis.
How is your daughter doing?
Best wishes,
Andrea
Thankyou Andrea for that info. now I have something to work on will look on the internet. My daughter has her bad and good days. She has tried every bed in her house thinking it might be her mattress, anyway her hubby is going to buy her a Chiropedic & Osteopatic mattress hoping that it will help. I think she just has to ride out the Ross River as the doctor suggested.  Thankyou for asking and hope you are well too. PS the reason for asking bout calcium was thought I might try some supplements after discolating my wrist last Fri and thought they may help, doc said its just part of RA great to look forward to.should have been chiropractic......so early in the morningRockin Annie. From what it looks like, your calcium is very low, not high. It should be around 10. Unless I'm reading that wrong. Maybe your MD should recommend you see an endocrinologist. Lorster, on the report is looks like this 2.73 mmo1/L   (2.25 - 2.65) and in red. Maybe our reports are different.Awww, Rockinannie. you are from australia. It may be measured differently. I'll have to look that up and see how it compares to our testing.
Has your doctor tested your thyroid and parathyroid function? Your doctor should be looking into other causes of this. Yes from aussie there isn't many of us is there, that probably why I have trouble when I try to compare my readings to those posted on this forum, I should have known!  I always thought my docs were excellent but after being on this forum I now know I need to do research for myself. I will ask more questions & thanks for the help
