A Decline in Uninsured is Reported for 2007

By IAN URBINA
Published: August 26, 2008

WASHINGTON — After climbing steadily for six years, the number of Americans without health insurance dropped by more than a million in 2007, to 45.7 million, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

The drop was the result of growth in government-sponsored health insurance programs, officials said, most of them focused on children. At the same time, the number of people covered by private insurance continued to decline.

Experts cautioned that the report, which also included data on income and poverty, did not take into account the economic downturn that began late last year, and therefore it probably presents a rosier picture than the current economic reality.

NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL - "Where's the Prosperity?"

Published: August 26, 2008

There is so little good economic news these days that we were cheered on Tuesday after the Census Bureau reported that in 2007 the income of the typical American household rose for the third year in a row. We weren’t cheered for long.

A closer look confirms what Americans already know: most families reaped none of the benefits of the previous six years of solid economic growth. Median household income last year was still 0.6 percent less than it was in 2000, when the last economic expansion peaked. Households led by someone 65 or under made an average of ,545 last year — 3.4 percent less than in 2000.

The census offers the same mirage when it comes to health insurance. While the overall number of uninsured dropped — from 47 million in 2006 to 45.7 million last year — that still left the number of uninsured Americans 7.2 million higher than in 2000. The improvements were entirely attributable to an increase in the number of people enrolled in Medicaid and other public programs.

Coverage & Access | Number, Percentage of Uninsured U.S. Residents Decreased in 2007, According to U.S. Census Bureau
[Aug 27, 2008]

The number and percentage of uninsured U.S. residents declined in 2007 to 45.7 million people, or 15.3% of the population, according to an annual U.S. Census Bureau report released Tuesday, USA Today reports (Cauchon/Appleby, USA Today, 8/27). In 2006, 47 million people were uninsured, or 15.8% of the population (Alonso-Zaldivar, AP/Kansas City Star, 8/26). For the report, researchers analyzed data from the Current Population Survey of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. (U.S. Census Bureau release, 8/26).

Joi,

You scared me. I thought by reading the topic Headline that you had changed. My gosh, Joi actually posting some good? Maybe she has turned over a new leaf. Thanks for bringing me back down to reality. I should have known that you don't post good news about this country, this government or this administration or big business or big pharm or medicines or people of this country (except some democrats) the fda or research or any endless thing that you can find that's negative. Thanks for binging me back to reality.

LEV
Dear idiot boy - that would be me that's anti-Pharma, anti-FDA and anti-medical establishment.

She just wants insurance for the people that can't afford care.

Sheesh!

Pip
Pip,

When describing yourself, you should add that you are also a liar. You came to this "rheumatoid" forum trying to convince everyone that you had rheumatoid arthritis when you knew for a fact that you had palindromic arthritis. You came to this forum because the palindromic forum got sick of you hijacking all the posts with your ap garbage and so started a forum just for you. Even at that forum you couldn't be honest. While trying to convince everyone how miraculis the ap therapy was working, a forum member busted you for posting at the palindromic forum how wonderful and painfree you were with the miracle drug minocin, that forum member confronted you and said that at the same time you were telling all at the palindromic forum how wonderful you were feeling, that forum member had read a post from another "pip" at the roadback forum and that pip was crying because of all the pain she was in. She wanted to know if that pip was you and why you were telling two different stories at the same time and you admitted that they were both the same "pip" and that you just didn't realize how loving and understanding the members of the palindromic forum were so that "pip" could have brought her pain to them for their love. Liar. When I confront you for having palindromic arthritis and not rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor all of a sudden declares that you had "graduated" from palindromic arthritis to rheumatoid arthritis even tho you were taking your miracle drug minocin that kills the ra bug but somehow actually allowed the ra bug to grow. You even have a "bent" toe to prove that you had ra for a very short time. Of course you were quickly cured of ra and are now back to palindromic arthritis. When you are tring to convince people with real rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that destroys bones and joints, don't you think that you have an obligation to let these people know that you have palindromic arthritis, a disease that flares and is painful for hours or days and then may not flare for months at a time and does no damage to the joints or the bone, a disease totally different from rheumatoid arthritis. Of course you don't, you have no morals. You have the audacity to tell Donna who is going to school to be a nurse that the doctors are on the wrong page and that she is going to be taught that right is wrong. And you have the audacity to call me an idiot. Sheesh indeed.

LEV
Hey Pip,

I still like you.

Joe
The subject of this thread was the 2007 US Census Report finding that the number of uninsured had declined.  Despite a decrease in employer provided insurance and private insurance, the number of uninsured was offset by the increase of people receiving health care through government programs like Medicare, SCHIPS and Medicaid, and from states efforts like Massachusetts, to provide access to affordable health care.

The state of our health care system is a growing concern among more and more Americans, including those on this forum,  as rising health care costs impacts not only the uninsured but also the insured, so that is why I post such articles.

The issues surrounding health care are complex, I can understand your frustration in your inability to rationally discuss this subject and why you thus resort to personally attacking me and maligning and misrepresenting me.  Such vitrolic attacks however do nothing toward fostering a discussion on health care and how to improve our health care system.

You accuse me of being "negative," when in fact I am a positive and hopeful person who believes our country can do better and will do better.  As citizens in this participatory democracy we cannot be silent, we must speak out for accessible, affordable health care.

I wish we had health care.

Due to my bills etc. we are moving in a few weeks.  We lost our house and are trying to hold on to everything else and moving in with mom-in-law.

It would be nice :)  I am glad others are finally getting some help.
Lev, I'll take offense to what you are saying.... I don't have any joint damage. Does that mean I don't have real RA? I don't have an opinion or experience that may benefit others on this board? Where is the cutoff? How much joint damage do I have to have before my opinions and experiences are valid? Are you saying that AP doesn't work at all? wouldn't that be your opinion? Are you that arrogant that your opinion is the only one that counts? Really?.... Also, Who made you the judge of character for the board? I've only been here a short time, but all I've ever seen you do is attack people. Who is the negative one here?... Joie's topic was relevant and I enjoy hearing a variety of opinions and points of view. Not just my own. If you all you want to hear is your opinion, try writing yourself emails. That may work better for you.... BTW Lev, perhaps you should inform yourself on Palindromic Rheumatism before you start going off. Also, next time try to dazzle us with your knowledge, research and expertise. The baffling is getting old...Joi,

Like I said, the Headline of this thread was a little misleading. I geneally, like most, do not read your posts because it's a given that it is going to be something negative. Topic: Number of Uninsured Declined in 2007 That topic sounds like something good and so I actually opened the thread but right away saw that it was from your favorite scource of information, the very biased NY Times. There is no doubt in my mind that if the article had of been "good news" thru and thru, you would never had posted it. Health care is something that needs to be addressed and fixed. It is not a problem caused by the administration and the republicans as you want everyone to believe. As much as you want everyone to believe that you are just a activist for good, you are just a big part of the problem, blaming all problems on one political party and believing that the other political party can cure it all. That is not a good activist, that is a devider and a reason why very little is accomplished.  I'm sure that you were one of those demanding a quick fix for oil prices and so use 15% of the feed grain for e-85 causing an increase in all food products and not lowering the fuel prices even one percent. You want change right now and to hell with the consequenses. You can always blame the bad consequenses on the republicans.

Jose,

Rheumatoid Arthritis is not diagnosed by erosion or damage and I'm not sure where you got that from by reading my post. You and everyone has every right to post on this forum. I am not offended that you take offense at my post. I will however try to make my opinion and statement crystal clear.

This is a rheumatoid arthritis forum.
Most every member has rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a very serious and dangerous disease.
Rheumatoid arthritis can lead to joint damage, bone erosion and even death.
Aggressive rheumatoid arthritis can damage a joint beyond repair with-in six months.

Pip has palindromic arthritis.
Palindromic arthritis causes non- symetrical joint pain.
Palindromic arthritis pain may last for hours or days.
Palindromic arthritis may lay dormant for many months with no pain.
Palindromic arthritis causes no joint or bone damage.

Pip comes to this forum trying to convince vulnerable rheumatoid arthrits patience that they should not listen to their "stupid" rheumatoid arthritis doctors.
Pip wants everyone to believe that there is a world-wide conspiracy to keep the RA world from the miracle drug minocin.
Minocin has been around for 50 years and during the times that it was used for RA is the time of the deformities and destruction of joints.
Whether Pip uses minocin or nothing for the rest of her life, the palindromic arthritis will not cause joint damage or destruction.
If an rheumatoid arthritis patient uses minocin for as little as 6 months, aggressive ra can damage a joint beyond repair with-in 6 months.
When Pip comes to this rheumatoid arthritis forum touting the miracles of minocin for rheumatoid arthritis, SHE HAS AN OBLIGATION TO INFORM EVERYONE THAT SHE HAS PALINDROMIC ARTHRITIS, NOT RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AND TO LET THEM KNOW THAT HER DISEASE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS.
I do believe that minocin can be used for rheumatoid arthritis as the American College of Rheumatology has specified. Even when minocin is prescribed, most always plaquinal or another dmard is prescribed along with it. The ACR recomends minocin for the very minor of minor rheumatoid arthritis. More and more minocin is being used less because of minocin resistant organisms.

levlarry2008-08-29 08:18:29Bubbagump,

I'm really sorry to hear of the financial hardship you're having.  Having RA is enough to deal with, let alone money issues.

You might considering seeing a credit counseling office regarding your bills, but be sure they are reliable and reputable.  There are some despicable people out there that prey on people at their most vulnerable times.

Below is a link to an article NickiLynn posted on another website that discusses how to deal and manage medical bills, perhaps there is something in it that can be of help.  Good luck and take care.

Joe -

I like you too!

I'm sorry to hear what you are going thru.  You hang in girl, you'll be OK in the long run and there is always another house.  Just concentrate on you and your health - everything else will fall into place.

Jose -

Thanks, but I've tried to educate Lev on Palindromic but he refuses to learn.  It might be because he's afraid that anything he learns will interfere with his beliefs in his doctors and their attempts to 'fix' him.  Therefore, I must not have RA, even tho it was in my chart etc. because his docs tell him Mino doesn't work for severe and couldn't help him.  He just has some sort of awful life as he can't stop attacking people chosing a different path than he does.

Joy -

I apologize for jumping in again with this idiot when I should know better, but I for one really appreciate all you post about the issues that are effecting us - especially since in the upcoming election we're going to be hearing a lot of 'ads' instead of 'facts'.  To me, you are the most important and necessary person on this board as you keep us informed of our options and what our legislators are doing to help us.

Please, keep up the good work, and I'll try to use my 'ignore' button more often.

Pip

Hi Pip. :)

Look Larry, you have your opinion and it's all well and good that you post it. However, the rest of us have opinions as well. If Joie wants to post things that you see as negative, it's her prerogative. I'm not heard her blame all on the Republicans, but if she does, she's entitled to her opinion. I am a card carrying member of the Republican party. There are plenty of us that blame all on the Democrats. Especially the Clintons. LOL... I don't have a problem hearing Joie's opinion.
As for what you said about PRA, you said Pip didn't have even one bent toe, therefore her opinions were irrelevant about RA. From what I've researched, PRA can (and does on a good percentage of people) turn into full blown RA. Also, it can disappear but it can also be there virtually forever and be "flaring" for years. You claim that Pip does not have RA, but unless you somehow have access to her medical chart, you're spouting opinion... Long story short, I know too late, what makes your opinions so much better than anyone else's? You claim that Pip is deceiving everyone, but isn't posting your opinions as fact the same thing? Who made you the judge of veracity and honesty on this board?... I welcome any and all opinions, stories, complaints, whining.... At the end of the day, isn't that what this board is all about?
Joie,, did nothing, but give us the info, that was out there on the internet yesterday, on health news..Maybe some of us would have missed it..

I don't see anything negative about this, we all have the options to read it or not.

She can post what she wants, The same rule that allows Joie to post what she wants, which I think is a good one, allows Lev to do the same.  And we all, of course, have the same option to either read or skip Levs posts too.

Most people on this forum treat each other respectfully despite differences of opinions or viewpoints.  One may disagree with the issues I post about, but that is not an excuse to personally attack me, calling me dishonest, immoral, a liar, negative --  things I've been called in the past and on this thread.

In order not to be subjected to this verbal abuse (which some may find entertaining but to me is quite upsetting) I did not even initially comment on the articles I posted, in fact, since some don't believe anything printed in the New York Times, I even printed an article on the same subject from the Kaiser Foundation website.

Having had 31 yrs worth of experiences with RA, I respond to posts on other subjects, but yet I am berated for being "negative" and anti-everything.  I am courteous and civil in all my posts, and would expect to be treated the same, but I suppose because my views may be different, I am not entitled to that.

In response to this from outta left field

I'm no longer able to drive.

Joie2008-08-29 17:10:58Joie, just posted this, and it was on Yahoo Health news...she made no comment at all. And attacked no one

I bet she has seen a lot, having RA, decades more than a lot of us, and seen the discovery of newer meds, and she has suffered the damage...

Keep it up Joie, the fight against RA!
