I always think I have blood sugar issues but the one time I had it checked out it was fine. Although I drank my glucose drink when I was pregnant (yum) and still had pretty low levels. I think it was checked in Oct. and was 74 or something.

It may be the anemia but recently (and actually this happened last year while I was breastfeeding but figured it was that...but this is the same) when I get hungry I am STARVING and I feel shaky and have to sit and all I can think about is food.  I had cereal for breakfast, chicken pot pie at 10 am, teddy grahams at 11:30, candy bar at 1:30 and I got starving around 4:30 and had more teddy grahams and I am so hungry I don't know if I can make it home to eat dinner, I may have to stop and eat.   I don't know what my issue is. And then sometimes I eat and I'm still shaky for a while.  4 years ago I was like this, freaked out, went to doctor during spell but finger prick test was fine.

SO hungry. I am 5'3" 125...prob could lose 5 lbs but don't gain or lose easily, can eat what I want but I don't overeat. but I CANNOT skip meals or my body freaks out.  I've never been able to do without breakfast.

So hungry...

Breastfeeding takes an extra 500 to 1000 calories per day.  I was ravenously hungry when I was nursing too.  In addition, I was pregnant with our second child while still nursing the first, so you DEFINITELY did not want to get between me and the fridge.  My co-workers were amazed at the food I was able to consume.  After my second was born, I dropped 30 pounds in about 4 months and was lighter than I had been before I got pregnant with the first kid - all the while eating anything that wasn't nailed down. My son was on ritalin for about 2 wks and we took him off because he had the shakes and I noticed he got really skinny that fast. He had a.d.d. the inattentive type and dexadrine worked well for him until he developed his own coping skills.

On a separate note, I get that shakey kind of hungry and when it happens, I get mean! My family knows... if I say I want to eat, I want to eat NOW. Not in 5 minutes and no I won't wait for you to finish xyz before we go out to eat, lol. My dr ran all sorts of tests and said I was borderline for low blood sugar. He suggested I keep a jar of pb in the car and only eat a tsp of it and that would be enough. I found the little individual packets of raw almonds and keep those in the car and I also keep the 23g of protein power bars in my purse, in my room, lunch box, etc. You just have to be careful because they have a lot of calories, fat grams, etc. They are great for anyone who is underweight. My docs wanted me drinking boost or ensure - yuck! these are yummy and come in yogurt flavor or pb or triple choco.
I don't THINK it's the rit.  I've been back on it less than a month.  I got like this before I was on it, recently.  It's a monthly thing in part maybe?  I ended up getting Burger King on the way home even though my husband had dinner on the table, but--just as you said--I like to come home happy and I would've been the biggest crab if I hadn't eaten right then.  This morning I feel nauseated.  I was thinking anemia but I was tested many times for anemia while I was breastfeeding and felt this way, but I was never anemic.  Who knows.  I am constantly having to snack at my desk!  There is one partner, and I swear every time he comes into my office, I am eating!   I need to get those chocolately shakes or something.  I don't eat that many more calories on average, I just cannot wait too long to eat.  I guess maybe hormones are affecting my blood sugar.
When I was on too much rit before (in college) I wasn't hungry, it was quite different.  I think I'm on the right dose now.
I think I could cope without rit (have been but...better) with intense exercise every morning but I haven't been able to do that in a long time...maybe soon...

Also I'm going off my lexapro, I don't think I need it anymore.  It got me through a rough patch but I'm fine now.  But that may have something to do with it?
take a look at what you are eating.  Try eating more protein which will keep you fuller longer.  And add more vegetables and fruits which add fiber and take longer to digest.  What you described as eating shoots your blood sugar up and then drops it back down really quickly because you are eating too many processed carbs.

So eat a high fiber/protien cereal (oatmeal is great) or have some yogurt fruit and eggs for breakfast
some nuts ;string cheese; yogurt;apples and peanut butter all make good snack choices

a good veggie loaded salad with some chicken or tuna for lunch

and a good well balanced dinner

think whole grains; minimize the processed stuff and don't go for candy bars as your pick me up....try this for several weeks and see how you feel
Buckeye that is what I was going to suggest.  I think the things you are eating when you are hungry are not giving you the nutrition you need to make it to the next meal.  Maybe you should try eating 3 well balanced meals a day instead of grabbing things on the run.  I know it's hard when you're so busy.  I struggle to eat right also so I don't lose more weight.

I have to agree with Buckeye.  I'm a type 1 diabetic who uses insulin to control my blood sugars.  While I'm low or in a hypo state, I take 15 grams of carbohydrate, wait 10 minutes, retest and if my blood sugar is stabilized, I go about my business; if it's not, I take a bit more carbs.  For eating and snacking, I think if you added protein to the plan you would fair much better.  All the suggestions given by Buckeye are good ones.  I can't eat oatmeal though, it raises my blood sugar too high, so does bananas.  Each person is different.  Why don't you go to Walmarts and buy a cheap meter and check your sugar level when you're feeling shaky.  If it's below 70 then you are low.  Also test before you eat a meal, then wait 2 hours after and restest so you can see what your blood sugars are doing.  By over treating your lows you may be spiking blood sugar up and down too often.  That leaves you feeling very fatigued and drained.  If you have any questions, please feel free to p.m. me and I'll help where I can as a guide. I've been this way for a very long time.  Good luck, Hiking_gal

hiking_gal2008-09-03 05:53:42Thanks guys!  I do need to eat more protein.  I usually have cereal & OJ for breakfast...sugary I know!  I had chicken pot pie for lunch yesterday and I just didn't have enough non-carb snacks.  Peanut butter makes me a bit ill. I don't have a fridge here I am just using freezer elements and I may just start going out to lunch so I can eat better and more, despite the cost.  Apples sound great!  I don't usually eat candy bars, I got the chocolate because i was feeling sorry for myself :) then was surprised that I got so ravenous later!  I had homemade pizza for lunch today but I am already hungry again!  I need to figure out if there is anything within walking distance with healthy options and need to bring in a whole thing of apples!  The hard part is that my office has ants (they come in through the window...unrelated to my food...haven't found it yet but I'm having to keep it up high) and I got ants in my CAR--argh!-I think from the parking lot here.  We are still battling those.  Trying not to use pesticides. I haven't eaten in my car too much but the kids leave crumbs...we vacuumed out this weekend at a commercial place...I found a great solution for battling ants. sprinkle baby powder in the window tracks or on the whole window sill. The ants inhale it and suffocate. That is all I have ever used because of pets and children. Do you have room in your office for a mini fridge? All the stores have them on sale for back to school college students right now. I take a zippered lunch bag to work that has an ice block thing I put in the freezer at night.  My lunch today was 1/2 a turkey sand. on whole wheat with cucumbers, tomato, lettuce, onions, a yogurt with a handful of raw almonds, a giant peach, string cheese, a pb powerbar with 23g of protein, and my new favorite - a 100 calorie bag of oreo crisps. They are amazing. Even as a kid, I hated the frosting in oreos and would scrape it off and throw it away. These crisps don't have any.   All that kept me full for the entire day and I ended up not even eating dinner, just a glass of milk. You can just scrape off the Oreo filling and send it all to me!
I will definitely try the baby powder--thanks!
I was good today, i walked to subway. I hate spending $ but I got a water a sandwich and a cookie and I spent just over .  And I got lots of veggies on my sandwich. I am going to do that every day and bring in apples and cookies as snacks (so i don't buy the cookie there)
Katie
thats a good start but try to think of something with protein in it for a snack.  Do you like nuts?  those are great and easy to keep in a desk.  The apple is good but combined with the cookie you are still getting a lot of sugar which could lead to a crash a couple of hours after eating
I am not a big fan of nuts. I can make myself eat them.  I used to snack on almonds.  I will have to buy some of those as well--thanks!  I just need to designate a part in my office to keep food that is far away from these fricking ants!  I keep finding them on my arms while I'm typing.
