looking for luggage advice | Arthritis Information

Hi Everyone,

I am planning some upcoming trips, and I am in the market for lightweight easy to maneuver luggage.  Any suggestions of a good brand?

Probably one carry on for the plane and one large bag to check in.

Take care,
Nori
I travel frequently requiring me to fly.  I have tried all sorts of luggage and carry ons.  I cannot recommend a brand but for the checked I suggest something with wheels.  Try to find something light as they are watching weight closely.  I did see some luggage with a scale made into the luggage--not a bad idea.  For a carry on, I take a big Vera Bradley tote bag.  I like this because it smuches under the seat in front of me and then I have it handy when I want something out of it.  If it is in the overhead, it is hard to get stuff out during the flight.  Then when you collect your checked suitcase, you can put the tote bag on top of the bigger bag and wheel the entire thing.  Many times I find the overhead bins are filled  before I even get on the plane--so I don't even count on that space.  Also, I find it is hard for me to lift the suitcase up that high without help.  Sometimes people help but most of the time I get looks like --"are you nutz lady--you expect me to help someone!"

Also I find putting items in clear plastic bags in my bigger suitcase--like cosmetics, etc.--that way the TSA people can see the stuff easily and if anything leaks--it is in the bag not on my clothes.  I also put my underware in a clear plastic bag too so someone strange is not handling my underware---creepy!

Happy travels!

I love this luggage -  My wrists are always swollen and pulling
a bag on wheels puts pressure on my wrists.  This luggage I
can literally put my hand on top of it and guide it as it goes
in all directions.  Really worth the money.
[QUOTE=nori king]Hi Everyone,
I used 3 bags onboard and one thru.. i took the most valuable stuff onboard!! clothes and makeup!
I like one on wheels, you can find cheap , good ones at thriftstores, if you like new.. and can afford it, anything w/ wheels.. and NOT Black!!  I swear Everyone has black!!  If you do get black, and i found one for 5 bucks at a garage sale, Huge, to haul all my stuff back, from my trip.. I painted my name on it..
or intials.. w/ yellow paint..
Also, don't be afraid to call ahead and let them you know you need wheelchair assistance..
getting On the place..was easy (being taken by wheelchair)...
transfering planes and  waiting for a wheelchair, someone to push me was insane!!.... crazy... insane.. and when i got home, delayed , at 3:30 AM.. they just left me, but thankfully 2 kind folks.. one seatmate, just met and a
nice lady, total stranger helped me.. The guy actually had to wrangle a wheelchair away from someone, saying it was too late.. wtf.. so good luck w/ them!!
 Believe and keep pestering them!!
ohh BACKPACK. .. is my fav onboard and huge purse!
Luckly I don't require assistance by anyone-- that is why I use the big case on wheels and the smuchy carry on.  I can't bother with the logistics of shipping ahead of time and re-shipping to get the stuff back home.  The hotels really add $$$$ on to ship from he hotel and I do not have the time to deal with it.  If it works for you--great--  I like to grab and go!

Whispered--I hope you are not one of those who turns around while wearing the backpack and knock me down on the floor!!  Between the backpacks and computers bags--watch out--it is dangerous for others!    (I found when hiking--the backpacks hurt my back.)
As you can see everyone is so different--you just need to experiment and see what works best for you.
Hey catnip - you're not one of the people that stand RIGHT behind me and then get upset that I move a bit slower and am more cautious when changing directions when I have my backpack on, are you?  Hell, I've had some people "rear-end" me when I've stopped - apparently they don't see the backpack as an extension of me, and act as if it's not even there when deciding how much space to keep between themselves and the person in front of them.  Or are you one of the people that love to quickly cut in front of me and run over my already sore toes with your large wheelie suitcase? Thanks everyone,

This has been a big help.  Luckily, walking is no problem, but my hands and right shoulder give me grief.  I will ask the flight attendant to put my bag up.  If she gives me attitude I will inform the airline if it really bothers me.  Isn't that their job to help passengers?  I will check out the samsonite luggage.

Take care,
Nori
One other bit of advice...if you get a roller bag, get one with larger wheels, rather than the little wheels.  They track better, don't get caught in "potholes", and climb over barriers like steps or curbs much easier.

I love my swiss army knife version. Though the retail price is shocking, I have never seen it retail.

The arm holder thing is real sturdy so it doesn't twist your wrist. Very practice innards, like a garment bag inside to use or not, and good pockets to use or not.

They are as sturdy, practical for traveling as a swiss army knife.

I travel a lot so spending 0 on a good piece of luggage seemed a good idea esp if it lasts 20 years. My fear of damaging wrists etc with a cheaper version while on in another country also made me look at it.

Have funNori, if you have a TJMAXX, they have some great deals on luggage, spinners included.Great ideas!

Thanks guys.
Nori
I got mine at TJMaxx - bright red with spinners. it was the biggest one they had too. I think I paid .99 and its a samsonite
