From Dreams of My Father:'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'

From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'

From Dreams of My Father:'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'

From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From Dreams of My Father:'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'

And FINALLY the Most Damning one of ALL of them!!!

From Audacity of Hope:'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

Summary of the eRumor:
A collection of quotes from two books written by Senator Barack Obama that try to highlight his attitudes about race and Islam.
The Truth:
All but two of the quotes seem to be accurate, but are taken out of context.

One of the quotes does not exist and the one about Islam is fabricated.

Also, whoever constructed this eRumor claims that some of the quotes are from a book by Obama titled Dreams of My Father. The actual title of Obama's book is Dreams From my Father.
In response to email rumors that have circulated about Obama, his campaign has created a page to respond to the rumors. CLICK HERE for the "Fight the Smears" page.

Let's look at them one-at-a-time:

"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."-Truth!
This is an accurate quote from the introduction to Dreams from My Father. The book chronicles Obama's experience as the son of an African father and an American mother.

"I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."-Fiction!
This quote does not exist in either of Obama's books.

"There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white."-Truth!
This is a quote from Dreams from My Father. It it in a section in which Obama describes a job interview with a man in Chicago. Race had been a part of their discussion and the full quote is, "There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white---he'd said himself that was a problem."

It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."-Truth!
This one is also from Dreams from My Father. It is from a section when Obama was a college student and wrestling with his identity including as an African-American. The quote describes his observation of what was required among his fellow students.

"I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela."-Truth!
This is from Dreams from my Father. The more complete quote is, ""Yes, I’d seen weakness in other men— Gramps and his disappointments, Lolo and his compromise. But these men had become object lessons for me, men I might love but never emulate, white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela."

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."-Fiction!
This is a corruption of a quote from Obama's book The Audacity of Hope. It is from a section that talks about the concerns of immigrants who are American citizens.

Here is the accurate and more complete quote: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."You know, it's too bad that you can't, you know, debate your point of view with TRUTH rather than LIES, but I guess that's too much to expect from a Republican. I guess if you had any truths to work with it would be a different matter. Thanks Gogo for correcting this - I am sooooo tired of rednecked BS and hate masquerading as 'facts'.

We know how this Bozo is going to vote - hopefully he doesn't scare real people with brains with his 'smears'.

Pip
Some of these lies are so ludicrous you'd have to be pretty stupid or pretty bigoted to believe them, such as 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' I guess the Republican political machine has figured out that all they have to do is appeal to bigots' knee jerk racism and they'll swallow anything. What does that say about the people who would vote for McCain, and what does that say about what the Republican Party thinks of it's followers? We've already seen how little integrity they have, and how little respect for the American people, from the multitude of lies they've been telling through this election campaign and for the last 8 years.Gimpy-a-gogo2008-09-12 08:50:54To the Foreigners on board.....Some of you use USA politics as a hobby. Too update

Rasmussen pole as of today

McCain  48%
Obama 45%

Pretty close race I'd say. Hard to beleive that McCain was 7 point behind before the convention.
So the lies are working? And since you think that's an acceptable way to campaign, I guess you don't mind being lied to. So what does that say about you?We have seen where the lies of the Bush Administration has gotten us -- billion a month for the Iraq war (nevermind Iraq has a billion surplus, we're still pumping money into that country); a record national debt of over trillion - trillion of which was added by this Administration -- and a record federal budget deficit for 2009 approaching 0 billion and most likely surpassing it.

I'm tired of lies and deception.  If the way McCain's campaign is being run is an indication of how he's gonna run the country, his administration will be just more of the same.

Ah Oh The libs seem a bit worried.....GOP'rs can only hope the idiots keep picking on Sarah Palin and dishing ther lies and dirt. It Backfires. BHO must be sitting in his room wondering how the hell could we be be behind. Afterall I'm the Chosen one  6T5, it's too bad you can only debate by belittling, taunting, and putting down, rather than with truth and facts. It seems to be the Republican way the last 3 elections, and it hurts everybody. Even you.

Hillary was wondering the same thing a few months ago.  These lib candidates seem to be making the mistake of believing their press.  The ego's of some of these characters is incredible.  The Chosen One's (lol) head is so big I think I can see it on the horizen.

See what I mean?

Is it just to not have to reflect on the dirty pool of their party?[QUOTE=Gimpy-a-gogo]6T5, it's too bad you can only debate by belittling, taunting, and putting down, rather than with truth and facts. Belittle ?  I let Joe Biden do that........

I mean you got the first African/American who is articulate and bright and Clean and a nice looking guy. I mean thats storybook man..............Joe Biden

No, Gogo, Biden actually said that about Obama.  He is not known for his eloquence.
The other day at a speech, Biden told a man in a wheelchair to stand up.  He really messes up like that a lot, it is known.  D'oh!

It's seem strange that any statement made orally or in print by OBAMA that may show his real feelings are called" taken out of context" or" lies" made up by the republicans.

I can't see why you liberals don't see Obama as some mongrel with a questionable background and beliefs that the dems are show casing because they don't have anything better to put in front of you.

Gimp, That was a quote from Joe Biden...not me
Well, look at what you posted and what he actually said. If you can't see the difference you have a basic lack of fundamental comprhension.Anybody remember when Dukakis ran the attack ad about Biden. It seems Mr Biden plagerized a british politicain speech claiming it was his own till Dukaki ran the two split screen.......ouch. What an idiot he is I am very tired of the politics of greed and fear.

How in the world did things get so low? We were once a bright light in the world, doing our best to treat all decently. The republicans freed the slaves and changed a huge wrong.

Well I decided to go to CNN since you like it so much. They have the clip there. Exactly what he said. Nice pick BHO for your VP. He thinks so highly of you

WOW!  A mongrel?  So anyone of mixed race is a "mongrel?"  And those opposed to Obama say racism doesn't enter into this race.

Please try to read, Joie. I said nothing about "mixed race". You are typical of those who take things out of context while blaming the republicans of doing the same.

I couldn't care less about his color, but i'm concerned about his ability to lead this country seeing that he is without experience and that he is basically a Muslim in spite of all the claims that he is not.

He's not running for Vice President, but for President. Too bad the liberal media doesn't dig more into his past as they have in Sarah Palins'

Oh, did I misread what you wrote, let's see, you wrote:

"I can't see why you liberals don't see Obama as some mongrel with a questionable background and beliefs that the dems are show casing because they don't have anything better to put in front of you."

" . . . Obama as some mongrel . . . "  In my dictionary, mongrel means "of mixed breed, race, origin, or character; often a derogatory usage.

If you don't like his policies, fine, attack his policies, not the person by resorting to racially tinged attacks.  There are a lot of "mongrels" that take offense in your derogatory characterization of mixed raced Americans.

Wow Joie everybody calls him black. Your the first hear to admit he is not. Doesn't really matter I guess but many people do not want to admit his mom was white as snow

JOIE, JOIE, JOIE  Are you telling me Obama isn't of mixed breed and mixed origin? I think your dictionary explained it very well. But i don't think that many of your issues are about BARAK HUSSIEN OBAMA I think you ladies are getting your panties bunched up cuz Sarah Palan is an attractive young woman with a nice shape, is educated and can hold her own with any liberal. You ladies are so used to seeing ol Hillary in the Pants Suits who got where she is by riding in on BUBBAS coat tails that you hate seeing a woman who made it on her own. As far as Obama is concerned he also came in on the shirt tails of a group of libs that realized they were a bunch of old washed up losers and dug up Obama to save them.

Mongrel -- of a derogratory usage.  Your intent and use of the word is clear.
