My mother is having a real hard time with the doorknobs in her
house. The house is older and the knobs aren't the easiest to
use. Please respond with your ideas!
We've done quite a bit in the house to make things easier to use but we
really don't want to spend the money on those lever doorknobs, those
are real expensive! Does anyone have any ideas besides spending
big money on replacing all the handles? Are there any
modifications or anything?
Hi and welcome,
The arthritis foundations sells adaptive devices for doing all kinds of things. You can also find items at medical supply companies. I know there are adaptations for door handles because I have some that I got many years ago. They are rubber and they fit over the door knob and give you a bigger handle. They are shaped like a tear drop. The fat end covers the knob and the tapered end gives you a handle like a lever doorknob without all the cost. They have adaptations to do just about everything. The ones for doing blouse buttons and putting on socks I have found very handy. The grabber for reaching things off the floor or up high is my husbands favorite. Its handy for getting the potato chips down from the shelf.

Our local pharmacy actually has some "adaptive" things, including the door knob covers, and the grabber thing. You might want to check there. They also have handles that you can use on grocery bags so it doesn't hurt your hands so much, along with covers for silverware handles to make it easier to grip silverware.
Barb, doesn't the Arthritis Foundation even have a catalog of adaptive equipment?
Cris
Hi Cris
Yes the foundation has a catalog of adaptive equipment. Thats a great suggestion of checking with local pharmacy, I haven't been looking for anything lately. Get it the cheapest place possible. You are the first person that has been online at the same time as me. I always get visitors. Are they going to open a chat room on this forum? I would like to be able to talk with people on real time.
