Sitting here in the hospital.. | Arthritis Information

I found out last sunday what was causing the problem on my head.  As it turns out it wasn't psoriasis but shingles.  Shingles and cellulitis actually.  I've been here now since noon on sunday.  I can see that I have two eyes now and the blisters have turned into the nice little scabs that you get when shingles is healing.  I've just been switched to an oral antiviral instead of IV but am still getting vancomyocin and invan through IV.

This is the second time I've landed in the hospital with something this serious while on Humira so I think maybe it's going to be a little too potent for me.

Anyway...I just thought I'd drop an update while my wife had the laptop here doing some work.

Bob,

I'm really sorry to read about your troubles and that you are in the hospital.

I had shingles along my eye once.   It was very painful.

I hope you feel better soon.
I am sorry that you are sick and in the hospital.  It sounds like you are getting better I hope you get to go home soon.  Let us know!!

Reegie

So sorry to hear that you are in the hospital.  Hope everything gets better very quickly!

Take care,

Lynn

I am sorry you in hospital, but glad they figured it out and the treatment is working, almost a miracle this day and age.  I haven't been on Humira, but I hope your doctors take a hard look at what has happened and if you should continue.  Good luck and keep us informed.
Cathy
Yikes Bob - that sounds horrid.  I've never had shingles, but I've had family members tell me how absolutely awful it is.  Hope you get some answers.
I am sorry, Bob. I hope you get out of the ole padded clink soon and better than when you went in.

My MIL... she is coming down with a case of shingles on her face, again. Well... she gets at least one episode of shingles every year, since she had hodgkins disease. She is going to the doctor Monday to get something to clear it up. Her face where her mouth is and her cheek is swelled and she says it is painful.

Much Hugs to you, Bob!
Shingles! Bob you poor thing, I hope it gets cleared up soon. What a painful thing to go through. I hope they're keeping you comfortable and that you have a speedy recovery.

Best Wishes~
Audrey
Hugs Bob and sorry about the shingles.

Keep us in the loop - steal the wife's laptop!

Sounds just awful- hope you get better soon!I know I replied to this last night....but I don't see it now.

Bob; GET WELL SOON!!

I'm real sorry you're in the hospital. Hope they can get you over this quickly. Take Care.
Today makes a full 7 days here.  I feel well enough to go home now and finish my recovery there but was informed today by a doc that covers for my pcp on the weekends that I might need to be here 4-6 more days.  It's not the being in the hospital that stinks.  It's the fact that I'm not able to leave the room due to the infectious nature of the virus that causes shingles.  I wouldn't want to thing that I've given it to someone else that has not had chicken pox yet.

On a side note to this thread.  Has anyone here stopped taking Enbrel because it just didn't seem to be getting the job done, gone to something else for a year or so and then tried Enbrel again and it worked?  I was just wondering about that since Humira has put me in the hospital twice now in 4 months with a serious infection.  I tried Remicade right after stopping Enbrel for about a year and it didn't do much for me either.  (but I think it wasn't the drugs fault...long story)

Hi Bob,

So sorry to hear about all you're going through.  In the past I've been in the hospital for days and in a rehab facility for months, stuck in a room, so I know what you're going through, gets tedious and sorta lonely sometimes.

Glad to hear you're doing better.  Shingles is no fun, I know of four people that have had that, hope it never reappears.

I've had RA for 31 yrs, and have been on different drugs.  I've asked that same question you've raised to my RA doc, if I went off enbrel to try something else, and it didn't work, could I go back on enbrel, and he said yes.  Of course, we're all different, and I don't know if the time in between stopping and restarting enbrel would be a factor.

How's the food there?  lol  Generally food in those places aren't the greatest, so I hope family and friends are bringing in some good chow.  Also to pass the time, have you tried doing those sudoku puzzles?  I hated them when I first attempted doing one, but then I got hooked for awhile, start on the easy ones, there are different levels.

Maybe hide your wife's laptop, so when she leaves she'll forget to take it, and then you can echat and google all day long.  lol

Well, Bob, take care, hang in there, you'll be going home soon -- time flies when you're having fun -- not.

The nice thing is that we both have our own laptops so I'm using mine now.  I had a hard drive meltdown on it but the manufacturer sent me a new one and I just finished reinstalling windows and getting things the way I like them.  I asked my doc the same question once and she said she has never done this with meds, but might be willing to try.  The thing is that the Enbrel really didn't quit working.  I was just sooo distracted by school and trying to study that I forgot to take it quite a few times and well....if you don't take the medicine correctly that's what you get.

I'm on enbrel and mtx.   When you were on enbrel, were you taking one 50 mg shot a week?  My RA doc prefers I take the 2 - 25mg shots once a week, thinks it's more effective.
Hi Bob,

Just read your thread...I hope you feel better soon.  Keep us posted, Hiking_gal
Best wishes.Hope you feel better. I have had cellulitis. Luckily I didn't have to be hospitialized. I went every other day to the opthomolgist(sp?) and took antibiotics. But the dr. sure scared the heck out of me...didn't miss any of those appointments. Mine was pre-orbital cellulitis.

Sorry they are keeping you longer but glad you are getting good care.

BeckyBob, I just saw your post. I'm so sorry you are in the hospital and suffering with shingles! My rheumy recently told me to ask my pcp for a shingles vaccine. I'm not on any of the  meds that suppress the immune system, so she wants me to get it now, while I can. She says I have plenty of pain, I don't need shingles, too.  That's what I'm thinking about you.  I've never had shingles, but have heard it is extremely painful.

the only time I had cellulitis, was from a crush injury to my foot. It swelled up huge  and hurt like crazy. Is this the same kind of thing you have? It's a very serious infection, I've been told. I wish you a very fast recovery. Hospitals can be pretty depressing after a while. I can't imagine having to stay in your room!

I hope you are able to leave soon. Best wishes for a quick recovery!

Gentle hugs, Nini

Feel better soon!Wow Bob, I'm so sorry you are going through all this. I had no idea shingles is so serious. I hope you get to go home soon!
I was on embrel about 2 yrs ago and I didn't think it was working and my Rheumy said to go ahead and stop it, I would know soon enough and I never noticed a difference, but I had stopped it after a month for surgery and stayed off for about 3 wks then went back on it for 3 months, so maybe I didn't give it a chance. At my last appt he stopped my MTX and said we'll probably retry embrel next appt (this Thurs) so I will let you know...

Get well super fast
deb
It was my understanding that shingles can not give Chicken Pox to those who have not had it.  However, that Chicken Pox can make those who have had it develop a case of Shingles.  That's what I learned in RN school anyway.

Get better soon!  Shingles is extremely painful and I feel for u!  Hi Bob,

One more day closer to being released!  Hope you're feeling better and better with each passing day.

I was discharged at noon today and am now home.  I still have the dried up remains of the shingles and will require valtrex for another week and levaquin (antibiotic) for another seven days in place of IV Vancomycin and Invanz.  So far all I've heard from the RA is a slightly stiff neck and my ankle is a little swollen.  I suspect that this is just from the other two things that were going on.  In either case, I'm holding the Humira and MTX but am still on 70mg prednisone so that should hold it off for a bit until I can get back on my meds.  (with or without Humira since it's put me in the hospital twice now with a serious infection)

Bob H.

Glad you're home Bob. Hope you will soon be well. I know it will feel good to sleep in your own bed tonight. Get lots of rest. I've never had shingles but from what I've heard it's painful.  Get well soon.

Lady Mick
Ain't it great to be back home?  Hope the shingles clear up soon and the RA behaves.  Take care.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

I hope your shingles clear up fast!
