New Here and a ? on Tetanus Shot | Arthritis Information

I'm new here, and newly diagnosed with RA.  I'm 32 and all of this is a bit overwhelming when considering that I'll be living with this disease for the rest of my life.  But I'm haning in there and have started treatment with Enbrel.  I am wondering though if it is ok or not to get a tetanus booster shot now that I am on the Enbrel.  Does anyone have any information of the safety of having the booster while on Enbrel?  I appreciate any information anyone can provide.

Thanks,

MC

welcome to IA., you're right, it is overwhelming, and painful and trying, thats why we try to help each other.

have you recently hurt yourself, or been cut to where you physically need a tetanus booster?  if so, tell the hospital, or care center what you are taking for your ra.  If you haveen't and just feel it's time for a booster, i think i would wait til i needed it.

glad you've joined us, and best wishes

I'm on remicade another biologic similar to enbrel. I go ahead with boosters and flu shots as long as it is a killed vaccine. Do not take live vaccines unless your RA specialist advices you too.

Sadly welcome to the club. But this is a great time to have RA. I think some of will be cured in this decade. We have reached a point where many maintain a remission on meds. Best wishes to you.

WELCOME> WELCOME> WELCOME MC

RA is overwhelming...But once you have your RA under control, life sorta falls in place.

It is a great time to have RA, if you really think about it.  So much is happening in this field, that there is hope that maybe there is a cure around the corner.  Sure helps me maintain a good chin up attitude.

Like the other members have said,  most vaccines/boosters with dead cultures, are OK to take.  I take a flu shot each year, infact my Rheumy's office calls me to remind me it is time for the shot and then ask what time is good for me to come in a get it.  Which is a good thing-since my memory is P poor these days...LOL.

Always good to have new members on board, we have so much to learn from each other.

Hope your day is a sunny one.

I don't think I've had a booster since I was a teenager. But if you feel it's nessesary I'd ask your RD. They seem to have a better understanding of these medications.

Welcome Aboard!!

I had a tetanus shot while on Enbrel.  I cut myself on a piece of metal and it had been longer than 11 years since my last one.  I asked my rheumy and he told me that I should and could.

Hi midnitestich,

Welcome the the board...Sorry it took so long to welcome you but I always seem to be the late one in here...anyway, I hope that you enjoy our board and I am looking forward to reading your post.

This is a good to know.  I bet a lot of us have no idea when we last had a Tetanus Booster...and if I am correct I think we need one every 10 years.
