OT: New Zealand goes to the Polls... | Arthritis Information

Yup. We too are facing a General Election in November, but on the 8th.  It was interesting to read a few days ago that some members of the media asked our current Prime Minister ( a woman BTW..) if she had considered the fact that the USA was going to the polls around the same time.

Huh??? lolol....

Although we do follow the USA elections with much interest, having them around the same time is NOT gonna distract those serious about who they want to govern our country. What a silly thought. And Id like to think all you in Nth America are going to be so concerned about whats goin' on here in lil ol' NZ that you will forget to go vote at home, or at least be glued to the TV to see how we are doing!

A wee bit of insight into our Government and those of the past. FWIW. But it is interesting.

We were the first country in the World to give the vote to women.
We have had a dreadlocked  Rastafarian as an elected member of Parliament.
We have had a Transexual as an elected member of Parliament. ( and she was a Mayor before that)
We have had a woman as the Queens representative in NZ.
We have a woman as Speaker of the House (the highest voice in Parliament)
We have a woman at the highest level of Law...Attorney General.
We have our indigenous people represented in Parliament with their own Political Party.
We have openly Gay  elected members of Parliament.

I personally think it is wonderful to see a woman given a Vice Presidential opportunity, and to see someone other than a white American given a Presidential nomination.

Both of our countries are up for change whether we like it or not. And change can be such a good  positive thing.

This is a late at night post. So forgive me that I have done the OT thang when the OT virtues been have so recently debated.
I consider myself smacked by some of you?!!

Cheers all and have a great day......Lyn

LyndeeNZ2008-09-15 05:26:15That was interesting,I agree change can be good! I'm hoping for a woman this term!Cheers LynGreat post.  THanks for the information on our friends down under!!Lyndeez, New Zealand sounds like a great place....AND I like Flight of the Concords, haha!

We have an election going on, too. And openly gay parliament members and high ranking women. We did have a woman Prime Minister once for about 15 minutes. We've never had a Rastafarian, though, although I wouldn't be opposed to that.

Canada was shamefully long giving women the vote, though, especially Quebec which didn't "give" women the right to vote in provincial elections until 1960.

We have a lot of problems in government these days. Seems to be going around....Reread this.  Interesting info.
