OT-Big Decision | Arthritis Information

Okay, not that big.  I am an attorney and I am thisclose to declaring that I am only wear pantsuits from now on, not skirt suits.  I only have 1-2 skirtsuits I really like and I don't wear them because RA makes shaving & pantyhose impossible.  Plus, I have big ole calves so I feel like heels are a must to presnetable.  But I still wear heels with my pant suits.  I am beginning to think I just need to ditch the heels and invest in lots of pretty flats/loafers with nice metal detail, etc.  to make them look fancy.  I can just wear skirts for my husband. :) Seriously, my foot doesn't keep me from walking, but it hurts 50% more in heels, so it's just stupid for me to wear them.  And pantyhose are a nightmare, esp. because I have the worlds smallest bladder and have to pull them up/down 4 times at work, at least.  Just not fun for my hands.  So I may find time/money next month to make serious investment in flats.  Any suggestions on nice ones?  I love etienne aignerHi KatieG! I work in an office too, though it's not as formal as a law firm.  I also have problem feet, and I absolutely love Dansko shoes. They are unbelievably comfortable. I wear this particular style with dress pants almost every day, but it might be too "clunky" for your office.  I think the patent leather makes them look dressier, but I also wear them with jeans.   Zappos has a nice search feature where you can search for by heel heights, style, color etc.

Best wishes, Andrea
I think ditching the heels are a good idea as well.  I'm 38 but long ago made the decision to put comfort over fashion when it comes to things like my shoes!  I have had good luck with easy spirit and they aren't real expensive as far as nice shoes go. Katie,

I'm a city manager and am also in suits.  I mainly wear pantsuits.  I do not and cannot wear heels so I really try and find comfortable and stylish shoes.  Either everyone is polite, or doesn't notice but I haven't recieved any negatives from this.  Good Luck...hiking_gal

hiking_gal2008-09-24 12:23:15Had to ditch mine too!!  Don't feel bad, you just have to look around.  The style is kind of for flats right now and I just bought 2 new pair this weekend that I love.  The only thing I do not like is the height I got from heels.  I am only 5'2 so I like all the height I can get, but I guess if I have to give up height so I am not in pain I am more than willing to do so ;)Im leaning towards skipping high heels as well.  I can go one or two days a week wearing them, but it seems silly when by the end of the day they hurt, even if it's slight.    I like the height that heels give me, but even more important, I hate to hem and so many pant lengths now are made so.....long.  I'm just a hair over 5'4, so right in between petite and regular - the petite sizes are usually a little too close to flood stage for me.   My DIL told me to look for Dansko brand, so there are two votes for them.  She's a teacher and finds they work best when she's on her feet all day.

My heels have gone out the window with the dresses/skirts unless they're to my ankles and appropriate with flats.  I also have wide feet so pretty has gone out the window.  I love the eitienne and have some of those and clarks.  Comfort wins. You should look at wearing wedges in shoes, same size sole and heel nearly all the way along if you can find them, they give you the height we all miss and they REALLY work. Also I change my shoes couple of times a day, especially if I am working, wear a pair to work and change to another pair in work.   Good lock.  I am an IT Manager for Fortune 100 company and I ditched the skirt YEARS ago, even before RA dx.  I just wear what you would call "power suits".  Dark colors, with shell or button up tops.

When RA hit, I just invested in a variety of shoes (flats, mid-height, wide, loafers, wedges, heels).  And of course I buy varieties of pant lengths now too.  About the only thing I threw away were the stiletos (spelling?).  I require all heels to be a full heel, not just a little spike.

So...go for it girl.  Throw those skirts out an get comfy!
I am a mortgage broker, and tossed my heels a few years ago.  The really wierd part is that I moved to FL about 9 years ago and bought new shoes, opened-toed with a slight heel in about 8 different colors, all the same shoe.  (I like to match everything, outfit, shoes, makeup, underwear LOL)  I had been a size 8 since age 18.  I wore these shoes for about a year, and they just suddenly got tighter.  So, I had to rebuy at 8.5 for the first time in my life.  These had little spiky heels.  Big mistake.  I realize now it was the sudden inflammation of my feet from RA that caused me to go from an 8 to an 8.5.  Then I had to scrap the new 8.5s because of the heels, which I have been able to wear all my life.  I have found the .00 Walmart ones and others with the big round toe area (kinda like Communist China-looking shoes) are the most comfortable ones for me.

I made some friends really happy as the second set of shoes were hardly worn.  LOL
Clark shoes do the trick for me.....Love em!  They look nice with everything..... I absolutely cannot wear anything with a heel. If it has a slight heel, I can only wear them for a couple of hours, if I go "out" for dinner, or some where nice (which doesn't happen too often anyway). I'm a hairdresser and being on my feet all day, I have to wear the most comfy shoes I can. My feet have recently been one of my biggest complaint. My rheumy thinks I may have neuropathy. Urggg.
I say ditch the heels and invest in good flats. Nobody is going to notice except you, when at the end of the day your feet aren't killing you.
I have had problem feet all my life before RA. I even had to have both feet reconstructed. Who know having too high of arches was a bad thing. Both my arches were lowered 1 and a half inches. I haven't worn heels since I was in highschool. My hubby is only 1 inch taller than me. I wear flats with everything. I even wore tennis shoes under my wedding dress. The skirt was so full noene ever knew unless I showed them.  Wear what makes you comfortable.

I love my danskos, born, bass, even my rockports are dressy and flat. good luck shoe shopping! I always check out TJMaxx or Ross before heading to Macy's, because you never know what they get in. I have found 5 shoes for under there. Glad I have em because I cannot afford anything at all right now....
