HOW CAN A CHILD WHO SPENDS SO MUCH TIME UNDER A DRS. CARE NOT HAVE ALL HER IMMUNIZATIONS?????

We got the MMR and I thought we were done after the chicken pox.  Nope.

The school called and my daughter is missing the fifth DTP and the fourth polio.

Oh no, I said.  She is supposed to be current, except for the live vaccines, and she got one the MMR and has an appt. for the chicken pox.

Wrong.

Ped's office pullled her chart.   At her 4 yr. exam, the note said the DTP and polio were to be held off until after she had an upcoming scheduled steroid injection.  That is what the rheums said and I remember thinking that made sense at the time.......but then she ran lowgrade temp for like a month after that was never explained and I guess everybody forgot by the time that drama ended.

Wasn't caught at her 5 yr. exam, when I refused the live vaccines based on what the rheums said.  But she got the hep A then, so you would think they would have noticed what else was missing.  They aren't live vaccines, and she was well enough to receive immunizations that day.

After that, we did check her titers because she needed a shot or a note if she didn't get the MMR.  'Everybody' was so sure it was no big deal, she would still have immunity from the first round.

She had NO IMMUNITY to measles.

She got the MMR.  No problems, no flare, just strangely had a cold come on rapidly after the shot.  I've never seen one go from 0 to 60 like that, and it lasted about a week and a half.

Okay, so if the MMR wore off, I guess she is wide open for diptheria, tetanus, pertussis, and polio now, huh????

But we have to wait to get those shots.  Because she had a live a vaccine, we have to wait a month in between.  If you get them together, they say that is fine, but if you don't do them together you have to wait a month in between.

So now she will have to get the three on one day - DTP, polio, and chicken pox.  Great.

Suzanne -

Please make them separate them.

Pip
The school is very good at checking this. So now you know you have back up on keeping track. Some doctors do not even give the vaccines to the kids anymore. They refer them to the health department.
Yes you would think the doctors office would have been on top of this. Guess that note from the RD's office must have bypassed there way of doing a system check.

You said she had no immunity to the measles. Does that mean that she caught the measels?
Morons - and I agree with Pip, space them out.  Her little body is working overtime with her disease, its not worth pushing this too fast.  It's waited 2 years, it can wait a few months for the whole series.  Home school her if you have too, plus she won't catch the opening of school crud and bring it home for your family's total enjoyment.  What a sad commentary on doctors.  I also want to suggest for your daughter, and for everyone else here, get the pneumonia vaccine.  I did a few years ago, and it has been great.  I used to get sinus infections a lot, and since the vaccination, I think I have only had 3 sinus infections.  I was discussing it with my doctor and he said that they are finding many people have the same thing happen, and that they also get far fewer colds.  For people with impaired immune systems, that is huge! You know.... I refused to let my son have any of his vaccines. Because I had read some where that JRA could be brought on by one of them. So... I just kept "forgetting" his shot record for every appt.

I am still not sure if he has had all of his, or not. I guess I will find out before he starts school in 2 years LOL!

Hope your daughter is feeling well!
You're fine.... it's not like there are measles outbreaks all over the place. Your daughters' chance of contracting measles is very, very, very low, unless she's travelling to third world countries or hanging with recent immigrants who are acting sick! And, it's been proven that when there are Measles outbreaks in the USA, children who HAVE BEEN immunized also come down with it. It's not 100% immunity.

I would space those suckers out as FAR AS YOU CAN. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD MORE THAN ONE ON ONE DAY. PLEASE.

With an already compromised immune system.... all sorts of crazy things can happen to an over-stressed body.

Be gentle with your child's body and immune system. Please!!

BTW - if your child has had a few DTP shots, you're fine, your child is not going to catch Polio b/c they are missing one last "booster" shot.

My son is 18 months old and has only had one or two shots. b/c I got RA after I had him, there are theories that his little immune system is at risk too. Not taking any chances.

Best of luck. Our kids are so precious. [QUOTE=Pip!]Suzanne - [QUOTE=milly]The school is very good at checking this. So now you know you have back up on keeping track. No comment LOL.

They don't kick you out as long as you have appts. scheduled for them or a drs. note or religious beliefs about them.

Our peds office does the flu shot, but  they never have mentioned the pneumonia one before.

We are getting a lot of marketing for the flu mist this year!  We've had at least two big mailers that say it is more targeted than the flu shot.  Glossy card stock, with the patient info insert sealed inside.  Pricey pricey pricey to produce and mail.....

I was worried about measles, because we do have a large immigrant community here and because several of her classmates and teachers do travel outside the US.  Ten years ago, I wouldn't have been worried, but a lot about our area has changed.

And a month ago I would have agreed that missing a booster wouldn't matter.  That is what the rheums, who advised against  the MMR said, and the ped, who was for it,  said.  All said she would have immunity from the first shot, the ped just wanted her to get the booster on schedule, not wait for the immunity to run out.

They all think kids are still protected.  Checking her titers proved that isn't always the case.  For her, she wasn't protected for measles, and so that makes me think there is no guarantee she is protected from anything else she is due for.

I have seen some articles about school of thought that maybe vaccines aren't effective in kids with immune issues, anyway.  Scary.
Good luck!!!!!  Sure it will all work out.Good luck, Suzanne.

Oscar was not suppressed at the time of his vaccines.  The only thing that ever caused him a problem was the Hep A vaccine. I wonder though if one of his vaccines triggered his arthritiis at 2 1/2.   I so get what you are saying about wanting to get them done now instead of drawing it out but at the same time wondering if it is best to separate them.  I'm glad we are done.  I'm not sure what I would do.

many hugs to your little one Thanks, Pam!  Hep A didn't faze her, but we have to get the second half of that still.  At least it isn't live.  Someone I know with psoriasis got the Hep a shot and she was telling me how bad it was for her - I guess we got lucky!

My daughter had her 2 yr. old well visit the Fri. before she got so, so sick.  We were referred to the ped rheum the following Mon.  Can you believe it?  If she had had any shots at that visit, no one would be able to convince me it wasn't connected!!!!  But she didn't.
Suzanne-

Continued good wishes.
