JRA?? | Arthritis Information

Hey folks!!  So to backtrack a bit, about a month or so ago Kelsay woke up about midnight w/ a 103.7 temp, the day before she had 2 shots which now for the life of me I cannot remember which ones.  Took her to the ER, they did a chest xray to rule out pneuomnia and eventually she was able to do a urine sample for them.  Took 2 cups of Apple juice and a cup of water and 4 hrs later she was able to give one

Thanks guys!!!
I'm sure they will ask a family history... definitely give him your DX..

and I"ll keep Kelsay in my thoughts that she doesn't have JRA!!  *crossfingers*
Shannon, I think you will have it all covered, you know the right questions to ask and you def. know what tests to ask for. Im sorry shes been hurting like that and i really hope that its just one of those childhood things that happen and not JRA! Keep us informed.
Big hugs to you both.
I'd answer family history (and all questions) honestly, but if it were me, I would focus on the fever that wasn't really dx'd.  You want something they can cure!  Did they do a strep culture that night?  Our ped says you do not have to have a sore thoat with strep.

I'm so sorry she is having such bad pain it is making her cry!  If you are having to use that much Tylenol, you really do need an answer SOON.  Good luck and keep us posted.
Hi Shannon,

I'm so sorry that Kelsay is hurting. I agree with Suzanne, they should have done a strep test but if they did'nt I would ask for one now.  Make sure that the Ped knows that she is having pain during the day as growing pains are known to happen during the night.  If the Ped is doing bloodwork I would let them know that in a child the RF is almost ALWAYS neg.  Along with the usual suspects I would specifically ask for:

ANA
RFQIGA
RFQ-IGG
RFQ-IGM

I would want a referral to a Pediatric Rheumatologist.  With your history and now Kelsay's symptoms I think that is so important.  Oscar did not get a dx for years because his peds were telling me he had growing pains and that because of a - RF he did not have and would never have JRA/RA.  I had not been dx'd at that pt and believed them.  It was'nt until years later with Iritis, +ANA his Ophthalmologist told us he was sure he had JRA.  We had to take him out of network to get a dx.

I hope that Kelsay does not have JRA.  Please do let us know what the doc says.

Pam
No, they didn do a strep test...

shes not swollen or anything, which i guess doesnt mean anything right?  I guess im just freaking out is all
she also seems to be hurting more at night and around lunchtime when they have gym/recess
Pam, Im soo glad you responed!!!  What are the last 3 tests you posted?
What about her Vit D level being low?  My RD checked my Vit D level and its at a 23 where its soposed to be 32 and he said that a low vit d level could cause pain
Poor little angel.  I hope you quickly discover what the problem is and that it's NOT JRA!   Sorry, Shannon,

I was on my way out when I posted earlier.  Those tests are for (I believe) specific  anitbodies that are present some kids with JRA.  I don't know exactly I have googled it when Oscar had them years ago and it was pretty confusing but I know they helped in his dx and they had not been done before.  I don't know about the vit D level for her but ask.  Suzanne, do you know?

Its ok Pam!

Yea I'll ask em about the Vit D thing, maybe its only prevelant in Adults/teens? i hate the waiting and not knowing
I know.  I hope she feel better Here is what I know -
ANA can be neg or pos, neg doesn't mean you don't have it, pos can mean more risk for certain things like eye issues.  (my daughter is neg)

IGA, IGG, IGM are antibodies, I think, and the last letters make the difference - acute or chronic - in infectious things but for RF, don't know.  (I think once my daughter had a pos IGA? only once, and the ped rheum doesn't even check that as far as I know because they always say she is neg for RF)

D - they recently checked my daughter's D levels for the very first time, and they were normal.  The nurse said that was great, you wouldn't believe how many kids they check that have very low D.  I said I thought my daughter's would be normal because we haven't been having to treat for pain and I thought low D levels were associated with pain, and she said that was right.

That would make sense for Kelsay, since she isn't having swelling.  Good luck!

Ok we are home...had a few detours along the way but we're home.  The dr was GREAT!!! He thinks its Post Viral Arthritis since she doesnt have any noticabe swelling.  They did a CBC and a Sed rate and we should know back in the next day or so.  And if all that comes back ok then its the Post Viral Arthritis and it *should* go away.  I forgot to bring my notebook w/ my notes in it so I forgot to ask about the Vitamin D level.  When they call back with the results I'll bring it up to the nurse.

Thanks everyone!!!
Hey Shannon,

I thought it might be something like that.  I would still keep a symptom log, though.  Did the Dr say how long it usually takes to subside?  I think I remember reading it can take some time.  I sure hope that for Kelsay it resolves quickly.

Please let us know when her labs come in.

I wish I could see the pic better, she looks adorable Hey Shannon:0)

How are you guys?  How is Kelsay feeling?
I know a gal who had post viral fibromyalgia, muscle pain, went away.  ???  If she has pain and no swelling, it is a possibililty.
