are you suppose to take folic acid the day you give yourself the mtx. inj.  my dr. says i am suppose to take it every day even with in inj. my sister is a nurse in a hospital and her patients the day of the inj. she has to hold the folic acid and doesnt give it to them i was just wondering what you are all doing. first of all i fill all 4 needles for the month, thats the way my dr. wants it done the pharmisit totallly disagrees she feels im not getting the full effect bec. there is no preserevative in the bottle, im so confused thats why im wondering is that why i feel no different yet its only been 3 weeks.    sorry for babbling

Debbie~I take MTX in orally but I do take my Folic Acid that day as well. Wasn't ever told not to...just to take it everyday.

As for you not feeling a difference yet; it's likely to take several weeks....or a couple months for you to tell much difference. It needs time to build up in your system. Don't give up on it too quick.

Good Luck!!

I can only speak for the Folic Acid.  I was told to take it every day and about 6 hours after I took the MTX.  That is how I always took mine and it seem to be work well.

Hope this helps you.

I also take my folic acid everyday

Hi Deb:    I have just come back from my Rheumatologist visit today and we talked about this.  She told me not to take it on the day of MTHX (I take it orally).  I had in fact been taking it and haven't experienced anything unusual.  I take MTHX Saturday evening and had been taking Plaquinel/Acid in the morning, same day.  However, maybe I will stop.  She also upped it to two a day cos of the odd mouth sores. By the way, MTHX really doesn't kick in for about two months or so.   Hope this doesn't confuse you cos it seems we are all getting difference advice!!!  Bye. Gill

Hi! I take my Mtx 15mg. on Friday night after I eat and Folic Acid 2mg. daily. My Ra Dr. told me it is best to take my folic Acid everyday, at least for me it is. I take my Folic Acid in the mornings.   Take Care! Paul

Hello!    When I took MTX orally I took Folic Acid daily in the mornings.  When I stopped MTX to take Enbrel, I prematurely stopped taking the Folic Acid (thinking I didn't need it if I stopped MTX. WRONG).  I noticed an enormous difference in my energy level - HUGE!  Now I'm taking a Folic Acid-Calcium combo 2X day.  I am a believer that the Folic Acid helps alleviate RA induced fatigue and I need all the help I can get!

Hi Deb,

I take my folic acid everyday. I recall my rhemy telling me that the folic acid will help with the side effects but lessen the amount of MTX your body absorbs. That's also true for coffee, even decafe so I steer clear on my MTX days. I suggest doing what your rhemy has told you to do.

As for the injectable, you should only use the non preservative vial once then toss. Seems like a waste but they can't guarantee the effectiveness because there is no preservative. I actually had my pharmasist check on this for me because I was nervous about using something over with no preservative in it. When you fill your Rx you should be getting 4 one use vials.

Be patient for your results. MTX has been my favorite most effective drug. I've been on it for over 3 years now. Hope it works for you!!

i am having a problem with the mtx already after 3 shots my liver enz. are already elevated i go to the dr.s on thurs. i have diarehea and nausea, he told me again to  use the same vial for the 3 shots and not to throw it away after one use. i amso confused bec. he says one thing nd the pharmisist is saying throw it away after one use.

When my Dr put me on MTX, he put me on the daily Folic Acid as well, telling me it will protect the Liver.  I read that it will "soften" side effects of the drug.   I read somewhere it's best to take the MTX at bedtime. I also take the Folic Acid daily in the mornings with breakfast.

My Dr never said anything about holding the Folic acid on MTX day-but I'll ask about it next visit.

I have heard people are having problems obtaining injectable form of mtx. Are you going to a pharmacy that is compounding mtx for you? If you are, you most follow the pharmacists instructions.

I don't think it matters very much if you take folic acid on the day of your mtx dose. I know folic acid helps people tolerate mtx.

I take my MTX orally, 1 pill/day for 6 days.

I also take my folic acid daily...1 dose in the mornings when I take my other meds including the MTX, and my second dose in the evenings when I take my meds that I have to take 3 times/day.  I also take it on the 7th day, although, I only take my MTX 6 days/ week.  My rheumy instructed me to take my folic acid - 2/day.  He did not tell me not to take it on the days I take my MTX.
