Disability and Savings Account | Arthritis Information

Does it matter how much savings you have in your account when applying for disability?  Does anyone know.  Thank you.

That depends, I believe, on whether you are applying for SSDI or SSI.  SSDI is based on your credits from time working and is unrelated to any assets you have.  SSI is for those who don't have enough credits from time working, and I do believe having assets over a certain amount will affect your ability to get it, since SSI is basically a welfare program for those with disabilities.  Check this link to see what does and doesn't count: http://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-resources-ussi.htm

Thank you so much for the reply.  I do have enough credits to qualify.  I was worried about if my savings amount would disqualify me.  I don't know about SSI or SSDI, but if you apply for ANY state based assistance (medicaid) then they will want to know how much money you have down to the penny.  I was over the asset limit on being able to get assistance for my Humira.

My mother, who passed away in 2007, had a life insurance policy on me for ,000.  After her death I became the owner of the policy with the wife as the beneficiary.  Since the policy had a face value of around ,200 I had to surrender it in order to get any help with the cost of my RX drugs.  So now if I kick the bucket, my wife is up the creek with the costs of burying me.
That sucks!  (no other way to put it)

When I was diagnosed with cancer at 11, my parents tried to get SSI for me to help out since my mom was no longer able to work. My dad made /week BEFORE taxes too much for us to qualify. He told the social worker if we lived off what he made before taxes, he wouldn't be looking for assistance!

To apply for SSD there is no asset limit. Not a question they even asked me.  There is an asset limit for SSI 00 for an individual and 00 for a couple.
