SECOND OPINION ABOUT RA | Arthritis Information

JUST YESTERDAY I WENT TO MY RD.  SHE HAD MENTIONED TO ME 2 MONTHS AGO, THAT SHE WOULD RUN MORE TESTS. WHEN I GOT THERE, SHE TOLD ME THAT WITH MY LAST BLOOD TEST 2 MONTHS AGO, SHOWED THAT MY CCP WAS NORMAL AND MY RH FACTOR WAS VERY MILD OR LOW.  I HAD AN IGG TEST A MONTH AGO AND IT WAS NORMAL. I HAVE PAIN IN MY WRISTS AND FINGERS(SOME GET STIFF), AND VERY BAD PAIN IN MY BIG TOE. THERE WERE SOME DAYS THAT MY KNEES WOULD GET STIFF AND BOTHER ME AND JUST SOME OTHER MINOR STUFF. I AM OBVIOUSLY NOT BAD, SHE DOESNT' WANT TO PUT MY ON ANYTHING YET BECAUSE I AM MILD. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW FROM SOMEONE OUT THERE, IS IT GOOD TO GETA SECOND OPINION, AND SHOULD I GO BACK TO THE PODIATRIST, AND GET THIS TOE RE XRAYED. SHE SAID I HAD SOME ARTHRITIS, BUT SOME DAYS IT IS SO PAINFUL, I WANT TO CRY!

I have been seronegative with ALL of my bloodwork for many years.  I have been diagnosed and undiagnosed quite a few times.  I have had big toe pain for 1 year now and went to a podiatrist in the summer to get a cortisone injection.  My x-rays are all normal for all joints.  I am considered mild but chronic in nature.  I will be getting my third toe fused because of chronic pain and also get surgery on my big toe in about 3 weeks.  The podiatrist based my chronic pain history (with pretty much negative x-rays) as for the reason for the surgery.  I had a toe fusion about 11 years ago for pain reasons and have been pain free since.  I hope this has helped.

If you are crying with pain, you at least need treatment for pain.  Aspirin or over the counter NSAIDS like ibuprofen and naproxen helps.

If you like that doctor tell her you don't want to live with this much pain. Or see a new doctor a rhuematoligist not a podiatrist!

I had a problem with the ball of my foot yeras ago. A GP told me it was a Bunion and would have to be removed; once I started seeing an RD she said , "No...it's RA and once you get on a treatment plan it will get better". It has Rarely bothered me at all on the last 11 years and at the time I was neraly in tears daily.

I hope you get the help you need soon.

Hello Joycee,

Did your rheumy do a physical exam?  Sometimes the bloodwork can indicate one thing, but, the physical exam can indicate something else.  Several things that they check for in the bloodwork will or can appear normal, especially if you don't have much inflammation in your body the day of your visit.  I hope you get answers soon.  If you aren't comfortable with the doc's prognosis, you definitely should get a second opinion.

Hi Joycee,

There is nothing worse than walking around with a toe, ankle or foot that is giving us h---...  Maybe a Podiatrist will have some answers for you but I really think the Rheumatologist may be your best bet ...There seems to be something going on with you but it looks low key at the moment...but still needs attention.  The Rheumatologist is best equipped to find the answers for you, although it may take some time.

Some of the things that can make a toe hurt is:

Gout

Osteoarthritis

Raynauds Phenomenoh

Ingrown Toenails

Scleroderm and

Broken Toe....

This site may give you some information that you may be looking for.  I hope this helps you.

You need to let your doctor know that you are in pain and to the point of crying, I am sure she will offer something for you...

You also can take up to 2400 mg of Tylenol a day, until you can get a script for pain.  Please make sure you take it with milk or something  to eat.  These NASIDs love to mess with your stomach.

I know it is hard to do when in so much discomfort but try an keep your chin up.

Toni
