Hungry for Lunch at 9:30 | Arthritis Information

I have posted about this before.  I don't know what is wrong with me.  I go through these cycles.  I never eat excessive amounts, I just get hungry sooner/more frequently, and my weight is pretty much unaffected.

So for a few weeks I have been fine with having breakfast at 6-7 am (depending) then being fine until lunch at 11:30 or 12.  Today I had breakfast at 6:30 (cheerios, 2% milk and OJ, plus water and diet coke).  Took my meds as usual.  Got into work and since 9:15 all I can think about is lunch. I can't focus.  I just called and Subway is open and I am going.  I am having my husband buy me some ritz peanut butter cracker snack packs to keep for the future.  But I am even hungrier than that!  Last night I had butternut squash lasagna for dinner, then swiss cake rolls and a piece of cheese right before bed.  Yesterday I had a snack at 10 am of yogurt, fruit cup and goldfish then ate a sandwich at 1 pm.  I am so hungry. I can't focus when I'm like this until I get food.

So I am going to call my RD this time because it is interfering at work.  I am fine for a while and then if I don't have snacks in my drawers I am just in trouble.  I realize I may need less sugary foods but it's the fact that it comes and goes and is so extreme when it happens that worries me.

Off to Subway...will call RD at "lunch" time...

Forgot to add that I am not on pred.  And I haven't stopped to see if this is related to time of month. I am on the pill. Anyone hungrier at certain times of month?  This happened to me right after my first son was born, almost 4 years ago, and I was so freaked I went to a walk-in clinic and had my blood sugar tested, but it was fine.  Since then I feel stupid to get checked out.  I have been checked recently (routinely) and was in the 70's which I guess is fine.
KatieG2008-10-16 07:00:26Hi Katie, I have this problem too so I'm interested to hear what your Dr. has to say about it.  Sometimes I get so URGENTLY hungry that I just feel I will pass out if don't eat something RIGHT NOW.  I get very irritable and also start to yawn really big and uncontrollably, like I'm going to swallow my head.  Every time I have my fasting blood sugar checked it's at the high end of normal.  The only way I found to control this is to strictly limit simple carbs and instead eat lots of protein, especially early in the day, and also try to eat something every 3-4 hours.   Here's something I recently discovered to take the edge off a little until you can get a meal: Kashi GoLean Crunch Bars.  I have only tried the Cinnamon Coffee Cake flavor, but they actually taste really good and contain a decent amount of protein and 5 g. of fiber, which slows digestion and keeps you feeling full longer. Here's a link.

Also, I don't have time to make breakfast before I leave the house so I've been making a crustless quiche or something like this recipe on Sundays and bringing it in to eat at my desk.  I'm watching my weight so I make it with Eggbeaters, and it tastes great.

I'm pretty sure fluctuating hormone levels throughout the month can affect our blood sugar levels and cause us to be more or less "insulin resistant", which in turn affects our hunger levels.   Are you in or did you recently finish the placebo week of your pill pack? Are you on a multiphasic pill?  In any case, I hope your doctor can help you find the answer.

Best wishes,
Andrea
No, I'm right around the middle of the pack.  I don't even know what to tell my doctor, or what to do.  I guess I will just mention it at my next visit.  Or go to the GP?  It just isn't normal.  And like you said it is SO bad when it is bad.  It happened to me up in Chicago when we were visiting my in-laws.  I am so used to eating whenever I want/need a snack that when I'm in a situation where I have to wait to eat I get so bad.

I should probably switch cereals, and thanks for mentioning those bars!  I used to eat that kind of cereal.  My jaw is a bit off still but it might be worth the pain!

I have always been the type of person where, if I don't eat breakfast...well, I never can.  I am weak and starving and mean. :)  So some of it is "metabolism" I guess?  I could never skip lunch either.  So some of it is in cycles but there is always a constant about it too.  I did have a drink last night and I wonder if that has something to do with blood sugar?

I guess I just want to be sure I don't have some sort of diabetic issue.  It's probably just hypoglycemia and I need to accept that and carry snacks?  I dunno.  I ate my sandwich and a cookie and I could eat more but I will hold out for a while. :)
Ugh....I don't mean to be critical but maybe if you ate less processed foods you might feel better? Just saying....
You also need more fat and protein - eating mainly carbohydrates will cause an insulin spike and then a blood sugar crash.

What about an egg or two?  A hunk of ham, cheese, chicken?  Or even a "protein" bar like the ZonePerfect or Balance bars? I only get like them when I am pregnant or nursing! No RA, no meds for me, but I do go through phases where I am starving for lunch by 10:00 a.m.  I eat the same breakfast everyday and usually am fine with no snacking until lunch, but then it will change and I'm ready to pass out midmorning.

I've quit snacking and worrying.  If I'm starving for lunch, I eat lunch!  I figured out it works better.  Like you describe, the snacks never help.  But even if I eat a very early lunch, it will hold me until dinner.   I think it is hormonal fluctuations, not necessarily related to time of month.  I think it is probably one of those things we get to enjoy being women!  I call it "feeding frenzy", LOL!protein you need protein..also add a midmorning snack..like a yogurt or string cheese.

Do you take Lyrica?     I started taking Lyrica morning and night for fibro..  Noticed that I was having the munchies or hungry all day.  Not gorging on a tub of icecream but wanted a bowl of that and maybe an apple then chips, then a sanwich, then a banana, etc (get my drift)

I quit taking the lyrica in the am. and only took it at night.  The urge to eat is not there anymore.  Just normal appetite.  Of course the 1 dose a day is not enough to completely keep me pain free but is enough(100 mg) to do a fair amount of good.
