OT:Bariatric surgery and autoimmune disease | Arthritis Information

I've had problems all my life with my weight and was considering this sometime in the future.(when the RA is controlled a bit better) That is until I went to the lap band site and saw that the procedure is contraindicated in people with autoimmune diseases.  I have to ask...why?  Does anyone here know anything about this?  It's probably a simple answer, but it's slipping past me at the moment.

Bob, I think it has to do with potential of an overactive immune system reacting to the band being a foreign item in the body.  Similar to the immune system reactions experienced by some with breast implants.  It is probably a higher possibility that you would have a negative reaction if you already have an autoimmune disease. That makes sense.  See I told you it was probably something I was overlooking.

By the way, love the little slogan at the bottom of your post.  I tell people something to the same effect when they ask about my tattoos. (4 and one in memory of mom coming sometime in the future)
Thanks, glad you like it.  Life comes with complicatons and restrictions, but we can still work hard at making it the best it can be.

Have fun with the tattoos.  I don't have any - my daughter has  comedy/tragedy masks on the small of her back (she's an actress) and my oldest son has a black raven holding a red rose with the word "Nevermore" on his arm (he's a Poe fan).

Maybe I will get one of a plum and watch it turn into a prune as I age!!!
Hill,

That's funny..a prune.  I had my mom talked into getting one with me on her 60th bday but she passed away before we could do that.  She didn't like some of mine, but she hated my piercings even more.  (just lobes relax...but they are nearly 7mm holes now)   On the original topic, I talked to a friend who is a PA and he says he would guess the same thing but he isn't exactly familiar with this type of thing.

You would be surprised at the older women that I see lately who have gone out and had tatoos put on as a result of empty nest, or loss of a child, etc. And some of them are absolutely beautiful. I don't have any.

Bob, I have heard that also on the advertisements on TV. it is a good question.
