Suppliments? | Arthritis Information

What suppliments do you suggest? I already take a multivitamin everyday.

The only ones I felt comfortable with are the Big 3 - potassium, magnesium and calcium.

OH!  And probiotics.  Run a search on Pubmed for probiotics and you'll be surprised at what pops up.  Get the good ones - the most live encapsulations and the most strains.

Hugs,

Pip

Edited to spell my name with only 1 'i'.

Pip!2008-10-22 09:52:22Have you had your vitamin D levels checked?  No, but I drink milk everyday and am outside 2-3 hours a few days a week.  fish oil and calcium..iron if you tend toward anemiaI was just wondering about this myself.  My mom always used to make me take vitamin c when I was a kid telling me that it would help me to stay more healthy in the winter months.  But I just read something yesterday that mentioned that vitamin c is actually bad to take if you are on MTX because it hinders the effectiveness of chemo based drugs.

I've been taking 2G of fish oil, a one-a-day, and a calcium with vitamin d supplement in addition to my pred(50mg and tapering, thank goodness!), celebrex, folic acid and enbrel.

I take osteo-biflex, calcium/magnesium, fish oil, Co-Q10, Folic Acid, and a Women's Formula multi-vitamin everyday.

I also take a prescription Vitamin D supplement once a week for osteomalacia.
I never believed in them. Now I am forced (Doctor's orders) to take Folic Acid, Calcium with Vitamin D & B12. On my own I take Biotin which Babs suggested I try when I was experiencing hair loss from MTX. I have to say my hair stopped falling out and my nails are stronger then they have ever been. I take high-dose fish oil (3g omega-3's per day - about 10 regular fish oil capsules), and it works wonders for me.

If you decide to take supplements, be sure to talk with your doctor and pharmacist.  If the supplements are powerful enough to produce positive results, they're also powerful enough to potentially have adverse reactions. I asked him that but he said it wasn't necessary and can cause more harm than good in possible side effects.  You might want to look into it further; of all the studies I've seen, the only studies to show positive impacts on RA pain/inflammation were using 3 grams/day or higher of omega-3's.  Standard fish oil capsules only have about 300-400mg omega-3's each; you need to take about 10 of those per day to get 3 grams/day omega-3's.  Smaller amounts can still have positive health effects elsewhere in the body, but are unlikely to have much of an impact on the pain/inflammation of RA.
