I went to my ra today .  I think he is to liberal with pain meds.  He wrote a script for vicroprofen and mepgran fortis .  These were not in small quanties ,.  I am in a very bad flare but it still seemed like alot.  Do other RA do this  ?  I know some pain med can be addictive , That is not a problem . I am a strong willed mom of 6 children . I have had ra since I was 20 y/o and I am 43 y/o now. I have tried alot of drugs to treat this illness , but I have never had a dr write pain meds in these quanties.  Should I worry about this or not ? cheermom38663.566875

My dr gave me 150 percaciot my spelling sorry. He started off with smaller amounts but he knows that I am not going to abuse it.So in the long run it is cheaper to buy bigger amounts cause of the fee the pharmacy charges to fill it at least up here in canada. My biggest fear is to run out during a bad flare on the weekend cause you will not get those kind of meds from just a walkin clinic anyways he must trust you so just make sure they are put away.......TERESA

I agree. You are lucky....some Dr.'s won't give them at all. Mine will give me pretty much whatever I want...but then again I've never been big on pain pills and he knows it. The only pain pills I even take are Tramadol and some kind of muscle relaxers. I know my tramadol was writen for 120pills with 3 refills....and about the same on the muscle relaxers. He asked me everytime I'm in if I need refils or something stronger. I always say I'm fine...but it sure is nice to know I have the option if I need it. So many others here have trouble getting anything.

Sounds to me your doctor knows you are responsible with them and isn't concerned about you over doing it. I think it's good that he's offering them to you.

Consider yourself lucky.

"Too Liberal with pain meds" In my book there isn't such a thing!!

LOL...Just the other day a person was talking to me about having to walk around on a sprained ankle and how he couldn't make it with out his every 4 hour pain mediation and that he felt like he was becoming a drug junkie...I started laughing and he asked why I was laughing?  I just looked at him, smiled and said he was talking to one and glad that I was...He looked at me with the darndest blank stare on his face and then I walked away, still laughing.  If only he knew the full story...I love my doctor for allowing me to have enough medication so I don't run out when I most need them...I am not going to ? the doctors wisdom.

cheermom,

Sorry, I do not have any experience with the drugs you mentioned. I am new to this site and also have RA. I have a question for you. You said you've had RA since you were 20 and have 6 children? I am 41 years old and trying to have a child (never had one before). Can you tell me if you had any complications during your pregnancies that were RA related if any. I know most pregnant women go into remission when they are pregnant and have RA. What about after your pregnancies? God bless you for having 6 kids and dealing with your RA! Are all your children healthy?
Thanks and I hope you get this message.hatehavingra38669.1723726852

You are very fortunate to have a dr who believes in giving you enough pain meds to control your pain. Just because he wrote the scrpts for a large quantity doesn't mean you have to take them all. although pain responds better to medicine taken on a regular schedule.

My scrip calls for 2 ultram every 6 hours. most days I take  2 in the morning and 2 at bedtime, but there are days when I am thrilled I have enough to take every 6 hours.

If Your RA will not RX pain meds, go to a Pain Specialist, they are board certified and not afraid to find the right pain med to help you. One thing to remember about pain meds, if you take them for pain, and do not abuse them, you will not get "hooked" on them. Do not take them when you do not need them. Only take them for PAIN.

I have been on RX Pain Meds for 5 years and I can not get by without them, they help a great deal but do not aleviate all the pain.

Take them wisely, they help.

Robert
