I have just been diagnosed with PMR and was wondering (if you're willing to fess up) what everyone's age was when diagnosed. The reason I ask is because I am only 29 and everything I find to read says that this affects older people usually aged 50-70 when diagnosed.
Thanks
I was 60 when diagnosed with GCA first and then later PMR.   I see you are on a pain killer for arthritis and a medication for high blood pressure.  Since PMR is all muscle pain related, I don't see how much the Relafen could help unless you have arthritic problems also; and the Toprol for high blood pressure?  Do you actually have high blood pressure at 29.  If I were 29 and prescribed all this, plus the prednisone, just for PMR, I would seek a second opinion right away.I have arthritis symptoms, Dr suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis (I have a family history), but after my RF came back negative and he did a few more tests, he decided I had PMR. I am on Toprol for semi-high blood pressure and a very high resting pulse rate. These issues started when I started feeling bad.

As for getting a second opinion, this is my 4th Dr. I've been ill for a year now, elevated SED Rate and elevated CRP, and negative ANA, RF. Only thing that has given me relief is 20mg Prednisone.

The Rheumatologist and GP both said they did not think it was Fibromyalgia because I did not respond with pain to the pressure points they use for fibro. My pain is mostly in my joints (knees, wrists, ankles, fingers) and my upper back, shoulders, and neck. I have morning stiffness for several hours, pain climbing stars and walking, migraines, muscle spasms mostly in my feet and legs, balance issues, and have had multiple falls.

It seems lilke I have stumped the Dr.s, yet I feel like they could do more (like x-rays or MRI).
Hi Jenn
I just registered so that I could respond to your post. I have had PMR for most of this year and I am only 44. I cant take prednisone as a treatment because of the side effects so I just take anti inflammatories and put up with the stiffness. I had an MRI but it was a waste of time because it didnt show anything except inflammation around joints. we aleady knew about that without the MRI. I'm just praying that it goes away soon.Hi Heather1!

I am male and 71 and have been on Pred since June 2005. I am now down to 0.6 mg = 1/4 of a 2.5 mg tablet. I don´t know what side effects you fear. I took Pred to avoid pain and to be able to more or less lead a normal life. For me this is more important than possible side effects. Just about the only side effect was that I had a "moon face" during a very limited period. I also had to eat Calcichew D3 tablets to get D vitamin and calcium, but I think that is good for the health anyway. At 5 mg I stayed a year before I could go down to a lower dose due to the fatigue I felt when lowering. then I thought I would try to lower by just 0.5 mg instead of 1 mg and I tapered by taking the new dose one day, old dose two days and repeated that once again. Then one day with new dose and one with old dose. I repeated this also once. At doses under 5 mg, every mg is a very large difference (from 5 mg to 4 mg you reduce by 20 %. That´s why I tried to go slower).
I tried Prednisone for 10 days when the Doctor was trying to work out what was wrong. It was fantastic as all my pain went away, however it interfered with my digestion. I couldnt digest anything and became very bloated and uncomfortable. Plus I became a bit manic. I am coping with what I'm doing so far. I am also takin 4 fish oil a day which helps too.
