ARGH!its a sad story but where did you get that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease after the infection?
"As the pain worsened and spread around her body, dozens of GPs and specialists blamed her problems on everything from tonsillitis and strokes to multiple sclerosis and heavy smoking - even though she has never smoked."

well blaming he illness something like MS doesn't mean that she actually had it.

Pip titled this thread " rare untreated infection leads to AI disease"

there is absolutely no evidence that this women ever had any AI diease.  And no evidence that her infection left her with an AI disease

This is a bacterial infection.  Where does auto-immune enter into the picture?

Ann
No, they didn't say AI but what else isn't curable?  They didn't say 'cancer'.

"The grandmother of five has to undergo three hours of drug treatment every day just to contain the symptoms." - that didn't sound like antibiotics and but admit there doesn't seem to be a immnosuppressive in that category either.

And I wondered what this could be - "Her husband Fred has now been trained to administer her drugs three times a day through an intravenous tube in her chest, which must stay in until next February when doctors will judge how effective the treatment has been."

Ann - my RA is caused partially by strep.  From dental work.  Also, c. pneumonia.  Those are cell wall deficient bacteria.  Some of us don't believe in 'auto-immune'.  That's one of at least 4 'theories' out there saying what happens to us when we get this disease.  Some say infection (APers) some say Hygiene, some say Danger Model.

Pip
makin' sh*t up as usual And some say AI issues have many different causes Well, why isn't Phats accusing them of making "sh*t" up?she could be receiving IV anti biotics.  But its strecthing things to assume more than the article saidBuckeye - I was thinking of some of the 'immune reactions' after vaccines, etc.  Also, PANDA's.

Pip
Plus, I've never heard of 3 hours a day with ABX - that would drop a horse.  Not saying they're not doing it...just the whole thing is strange.

Pip
the treatment for this disease according to several internet sites is prolonged high dose antibiotics first IV followed ,for up to a year,  with oral antibiotics.  So 3 courses a day may not be out of line considering she has been sick for 20 yearsPip,

What's wrong with you? Why do you keep posting as if you have rheumatoid arthritis?  You need big help.

And some just lie about their disease for whatever sick reasons. Pip, you have palindromic arthritis, not rheumatoid arthritis.
imho infection is an effect, not cause
cause could be poor nutrition, toxins, stress, opening a run down body open to infections and such
Gimp,
You been on that 420 a little today?  The article didn't say anything about AI, Pip did.  That is all I was saying.  Go back to smokin' JSNM,
It was labelled as OT-but Pip still made the Ass-umption that it was AI related, that was my only point.
Your point about women and men and the differences in the care they receive is right on.  It is a shame, but so true.  Women are often labelled as "hormonal or crazy" instead of looking for the true problem.
