Methotrexate | Arthritis Information

Hello everyone,

I have just joined up tonight and would like to know if anyone else has suffered with menstrual problems whilst taking methotrexate, I have to go in for an operation to remove my womb lining in December because I had a 6 week period followed by another regular period 4 days later, These problems have only just started since I began taking the MTX, I'm on the 10th weekly oral dose dose tomorrow (27th October) I also have a lot of other side effects from the tablets and am really considering coming off them.
Can anyone help with some info?
Regards  Mary.
how old are you maryeileen?

do you mean an ablation?
hello babs10, I am 52 and had been going through the menopause with no problems until apporx 10 weeks ago when I started on the MTX , my doctor said I needed this op because i was on MTX, but as usual I didn't ask what she meant.
yes I do mean an ablation, I just feel if its these tablets that is causing my problems an op is a rather extreme measure.
mary.
I'm 51 and well into menopause.. five years now...
I had periods as you describe when I had fibroids in 2000. (at 43 years)  It happens to us as we age... things get fouled up... from what friends who have had ablations say... once it's over, you'll be happy about it
What are your other issues w/ MTX.. headaches?  upset stomach?  tired?
We all have solutions to many of the adverse issues... tell us what troubles you!!
hello babs10.
I am suffering with nausea really badly, and have to take strong antacid tablets to combat it, I have no appitite and feel like i couldn't eat another thing even though my stomach is empty, I have dizzy moments and i have total zero energy which comes over me so quickly. I also seem to feel  pain much more now, every small pain feels huge and if someone prods me i can still feel it 1o-15 minutes later
I am taking 20mg orally of MTX each monday and still feeling ugh on sunday and folic acid the  other 6  days . I can change over to injections if i want to but will decide that after my trip to the US is over in Dec,  On the plus side my pain has eased a lot and i find i can do more now than before i started the meds.
On the problems with my periods, i went for blood tests this last monday and the paramedic who did them said i had to have a plaster put on after my injection because i was on MTX then my doctor said i should have the ablation op because i was on MTX too and it seems strange they both said that, which was why i asked if anyone had menstrual problems with MTX.
sorry for whining on but i figure people on this site will know exactly what i'm going on about and can give tried and trusted advice.
regards  Mary.
I've been having similar problems with my period the last couple of years...in fact I just finished an almost 2 month period.  First time this happened was last year and I had an ultrasound done and all that was said was that there was thinning of the uterine lining....no other problems.   Now I'm having the period problem again and I go see my doctor in a week and a half.  Noone has said anything about my taking mtx.  I'm 46 and I'm assuming it has more to do with hormones than anything.  I've been taking mtx for over 16 years now and like I said, this has only just started since last year.  I think I'll mention the mtx though with my doctor when I see him.

Good luck next month, Mary...and welcome!
I take my MTX on Saturday -- ALL day saturday I drink ALOT of water... and same the day after.. LOTS of water and I eat small meals several hours apart...

I take the dose Sat. night at dinner time (with a meal!) and go to bed normal time.  I sleep longer than on any other day.. but on Sunday I can sleep in!!  When I had nausea with the meds.. my RD said:  Take a dose of a cough med w/ dextromethorphan two hours before I take MTX.. then four/six hours later (as cough med says) and then in the morning. Amazingly, I have NO nausea!!  none.

OK.. about the periods and surgery.. I'm not sure that the surgery is because of MTX, but that things maybe need to be handled differently?  I really don't know.  I wish you the best with all that though.

and whine...  any time.
Hello snowowl.
Yes i never thought about the plaster warding off infection, that does make sense. I do take my pills altogether, i take 8 MTX, 150mcg of thyroxin and at night take an antacid tablet, a total of 11 in the morning and 1 at night, I will try what you suggest and get back to you on what changes there are.
I have a son and american daughter in law and 2.5
Thanks for your tips and support.....Mary

Hello babs10,
I dont get a day where i can just sleep in, I am an accommodation provider and have a bed and breakfast farmhouse, we have been really busy this year and I am really looking forward to having a break when I visit my son and family (although i doubt i will get any lie ins with my 2 grankids
i'm not sure whether i can take the cough medicine with MTX, my doctor is strict about what i take as i seem to be allergic to most drugs and have real bad side effects, I cant even take anti inflammatories.
Thank you for replying, it feels like i've found a whole new bunch of friends to talk to who dont think i'm a hypocondriac. many, many, thanks.
Regards.....mary.
After being on MTX for a year I went into menopause. Very strange effect on my cycles and then suddenly they stopped all together. My hormone levels tested well into full blown menopause. I went on HRT for a few years and then stopped that. No real menopause symptoms left. All of the sudden I had what seemed like a period. They thought stopping the hormone pills could be the cause but An ultra sound revealed a phylop. I had a D&C and something else; I can't remember what they called it. They bacially scrap the inside of your uterus. I don't think you're able to have children after that because they won't do it unless your finished having children. They pretty much promised I'd have no further problem with bleeding unless something major was going on. It's a pretty simple procedure. Felt fine with a couple days. Just try to do the test on a Friday and relax all weekend.

At 37 I've been in menopase for years.  I recently had to stop MTX due to some liver problems and it will be very interesting to see if my periods return although since the D&C that's pretty unlikely.

Welcome to our group. You've joined at a rather embarrashing point for us. Please don't let the tone of certain threads scare you off. We're really a pretty friendly bunch although it's hard to see that right now.

Hope to see more of you here.
hello lovie, thank you for your words. I read an email from someone who was leaving because of rascist comments from other members, if thats what you are refering to. I sent a reply to her saying how she should not leave because of what had been wrote about her, that they were just ignorant bullies, it doesn't matter what colour we are, we all have the same problems with RA.
look forward to many more postings from you all.
regards....mary.Welcome Maryeileen,
I too had to have an ablation while on MTX but I dont think the MTX caused the problem,  the main reason I had to have the procedure was because with the problems and the MTX my hemoglobin dropped very low.  Hadnt had a problem since, no longer on MTX due to it not helping but the ablation was the most wonderful thing I have ever had a Dr suggest.  It has been 5 years now and it is still great!!!  Hang in with the MTX I heard it helps most people.
hello ncpalinda. thank you for your reply. It would seem that in quite a few of the replies i've had, problems with ablation/periods have come up, i read on an english website all the side effects for MTX and menstrual problems was there on the list, hence my initial question.
I am going to phone my rheumatology nurse later today and just ask her outright if there is any connection and will post her reply later on. i just got a gut feeling i wasn't told everything about the medication/side affects by the rheumatology doctor back in august when i started the MTX and that gut feeling is just not going away.
I think i need to go to bed now and sleep off my worries, its 1.40am and i'm tired, many thanks for listening to my ravings.
Regards  mary
