OT- Apt. below daughter's broken into | Arthritis Information

Yikes.

My daughter emailed me to tell me the downstairs apt. has been broken into! This is her first apt.- she just moved in August.

She is a real nervous type and I can just see this setting off anxiety attacks.  When she was a kid she had a bad reaction to seeing the movie Home Alone and always thought OUR house was going to get broken into.

The police are there now so I hope they give her some suggestions on how to keep safe. I hope she didn't move into a bad area...
Even good areas have break-ins.   There are alarm systems available even for apartment-dwellers.  She should also have renters' insurance.  It's pretty cheap - about 0 a year.  Tell her to find out if there's a neighborhood watch in her area, and also make contact with the community policing department.  Call the police any time something looks suspicious - she can remain anonymous.  If the "bad element" knows that there are a bunch of neighborhood busybodies willing to call the police any time something looks out of place they'll go elsewhere to raise hell.

I just asked her if she had ever pursued the renter's insurance- I had told her about when she moved in. Good idea about the neighborhood watch- if there is not one maybe she can help get it started.
She already had to call the police once about domestic violence. A couple were getting physical outside and were arguing loud. She told the police she wanted to be annoymous but do you believe they came right to her door to ask more questions!!!

I hope you are right about the police offering her some advice about safety. And Jasmine had some very good suggestions, as she usually does.

Just let her know that, since the one below her was just hit, it is unlikely that anyone will break in to that building again very soon. But it is natural she should be a bit uneasy. Especially, since it is her first apartment.

I hope it isn't too traumatic for her.
Hope you are well. Hugs, Nini
Yeah- she had called 911. We were surprised that they took it upon themselves to come to her door. I was like- see that's why people end up not doing the right thing.
She had only been there a week and she didn't want to cause trouble but in the same token if someone ended up dead later that night she would have felt awful!
She was so nervous about the whole thing she didn't question the officer as to why he didn't respect her request.
I live in a bit of a rough area.  I've got police dispatch and my city council rep on speed dial.  Whenever anything happens, I let my rep know, right after I call the cops.  I am also a registered voter and I vote in every election... and he knows that. Thanks Nini.
She wrote me back about the renter's insurance and said no she didn't get it but she was more concerned with her life than her stuff. I gave her JR's advice and told her she should still get an insurance policy.
She has a deadbolt but she says her door to the apt. is flimsy. I'm thinking about it and it's not a real heavy duty door. But...the exterior door is. She better just make sure it's always locked down there before she goes to bed.

Our town no longer accepts calls on their nonemergency number... we were given notice that ALL calls will be routed through 911 dispatch...  It's a cost effective and efficiency issue they said...

oooh I'm going to send her the link to the alarms- I bet she would feel safer and if she gives me the I'm so broke line I'll get them for her!Hey-just popped in-been avoiding the political stuff!

Definitely look into the alarms.  Anything that comes under the deterrent catagory will usually work.  These are crimes of opportunity, they want an easy mark...get in get out.  I swear our ADT stickers work as well as the actual alarms, because any possible thief is just going to look for an easier mark.  Good-luck.  La
Sorry to hear this.  Good luck to her. Alarms can help.  Also dogs, rottweiler type!!!!!!LOL well she just got a kitten....
Cute little thing- she sent me pictures of her and her boyfriend holding her. The shots remind me of pictures of my husband and myself holding her as a baby....YIKES!
Her boyfriend making his presence seen might also be helpful.  Good luck with the kitten.

Actually, I have friends in L.A. who were robbed and they DID get a rottweiler.  No problem since.

We had a rottweiler for 12 years and when he passed we got a pitbull. She's 11 now. Both dogs were/are the biggest babies!  They look intimidating though!

Yes, they do!!!!!WTB-

How is she doing now?

She's doing good- thanks for asking! She got herself a little "attack" kitten. She says she's crazy- she runs around the apt. hissing and spitting!

Glad she is O.K.
