OT Obama and RA | Arthritis Information

Well, I just finished watching the best informercial on how RA can affect a family: from the suffering patient, to the tired spouse, to the cost of medical care, and the ruins of a promised retirement.  12 medications?  Barack Obama just gave the greatest boost of free publicity to RA patients than anyone else in history.  Cathy justsaynoemore2008-10-29 17:13:38Really?  Wow!  It hasn't played yet here on the west coast, but how great for RAers and those w/chronic diseases, to educate folks about the issues we face, not only in terms of our health and health insurance coverage, but the pressure it places on finances and family.  Will tell everyone here in California to tune in -- they all know I have RA, but I don't think they are fully aware of some of the pressures I face having RA for all these years.

Well shut I didn't watch it!When is the infomercial on RA on the left coast and what channel?

Pip
I think its on cbs and nbc, not sure about the cable channels -- don't have it (i'm fiscally conservative  )  Time?  Not sure, maybe at 7, 7:30 or 8:00?  maybe check those networks websites.

It was on at 8:00 EST on a number of channels:  NBC, CBS, Univision (Spanish), MSNBC, and some others.  This is a mind-blowing 5 minutes about RA - its shocking, real, true.  checked the website for the local nbc affiliate up here in central california, and it's scheduled for 8pm

thanks cathy!

Yes, and the man worked hard all his life, and what , was it, he lost his insurance, and at age, 72,...... his house paid off, he built it?....and he had to go in debt, to pay for his wifes RA meds, so he had to, age 72 , go to work at Walmart

She was shown rubbing some creme like Capsaisan on her hands..they were really deformed, her hands.

My heart went out to themYou can see it on Obama's website (although it doesn't have the last 3 minutes which was live...the RA part is around 5 or 10 minutes in, I think.Joy,

I am in so cal and I saw it on Keith O at 5pm (msnbc).  I think it might be coming in again any minute as it is time for his show to repeat Nope, they are not showing it again.  I guess you have to wait til 8.I just saw it and LOVED it.  All except the part about oil drilling.  That's going to put them just off shore and in places we need to keep 'clean'.

So when is McCains version?

Also, Pam - where in SoCal?

The situation of the woman with RA mentioned tonight, is common to many woman who lose their husband's employer provided insurance coverage once he retires and goes onto Medicare.  For these women yet ineligible for Medicare, some are able to continue health insurance through COBRA, paying the TOTAL cost of the premium -- the employers and the employees contribution.  (I'm not sure how long COBRA lasts, possibly 12 or 18 months)  After that, than one would have to purchase an individual plan,  for an older woman, with most likely several health conditions this would be very expensive.  And for some older woman with an expensive, pre existing condition like RA, they would simply be denied health insurance.

Many people in this situation have worked hard all their lives and saved, but health care costs and insurance have increased so much, their savings do not cover their health care needs.  Even if they have insurance, the premium, deductible, copayments and out of pocket expenses can take a big chunk out of their budget.

This is one situation where our health care system fails, especially women, at a time when timely, appropriate medical care is most needed, to keep them as healthy and physically functional as possible.

I was THRILLED it was an RA medical issue. Too bad she did not bring up the price of biologics. I bet she cannot afford it. Maybe now that we know that Obama is aware of RA, who knows, we may get some attention if he wins. Joie - Cobra was one year for me. I know I am in a poor state but I wonder if other states medical plans pay more for RA. My state pretty much, cut off all my meds. No insurance will take on someone with RA, it is progressive and so very very expensive.   It has been a long 1.5 years since my COBRA ran out, health took a signigicant dive for that time - anyway I am so grateful for Medicare. (Even though SOME people would call it me being on the govt. doles LOL)Well, I haven't seen the broadcast being discussed, yet, but I did want to point out that I don't think this topic is at all OT. GoGo - I wanted to cover all my bases :)Cobra is 18 months by Federal Law and can be extended for several reasons including being approved for SSDI as long as the date of disability is prior to the date of COBRA elgibility or within 60 days after the elgibility date.  It can also be extended if "employee"  the spouse is elgible for Medicare but the other spouse isn't
