lap band surgery with RA | Arthritis Information

Hi-Does anyone know if it is possible/wise to have lap bad surgery when you have RA?

Thanks

I think It is better decided with your health care team. I for one find nothing wrong with weight loss surgery. Only for those who suffer from obesity that otherwise have failed to controll weight and that is suffering from health related issues contributed to morbid obesity. I know people who have had Gastric By-pass and it has changed their lives for the better.
Best of luck,

Shame on you and this forum!

AchingAudrey2008-11-30 11:47:38I have a few friends who have had gastric bypasses.... and have done well.. I know one man who has done horribly and almost died..  (sorry) he's thin but not well.
It would mean stopping meds for awhile...
I strongly suggest that  you speak w/ all your med team... and usually it is required that you have a psyche exam.... for a couple of reasons, one being you need to find out why you eat if it's excessive.....
I had my rituxa infusion the other day with a woman who had gastric bypass last year.  She's lost 115lbs
I believe that lap band surgery is not indicated in people with autoimmune diseases.  I've had a weight problem most of my life and was looking into this about a month ago myself.  Your doc would be able to answer this question though.

good luck

Interesting thread, I have been thinking about this myself quite a bit over the last few months.  I know the weightloss would be a benefit especially since my hips are acting up.  I might approach this with my GP.The problem with the lap band surgery is that it is putting a foreign object in your body.  People with RA have immune system issues so the chance of it being "rejected" or causing further complications outweights the benefits.  At least, that is what I gathered from the commercials.

My cousin had gastric bypass a few years ago and lost a bunch of weight. She doesn't have ra but she is 50 something. She has to take meds for the rest of her life. I only see her about once a year at reunions and I almost didn't know her. She has changed so much. Her health hasn't been so good. She catches alot of viruses and is sick alot.rocckyd is right they do not recommend this procedure for people with autoimmune disorders. I asked about it and both my dr and rd said NO they said the lapband would cause more problems than anything, because of my autoimmune disorders. I even asked the surgeon who does the procedure and he said he wouldn't do it due to my disorders.
