I have had 6 Remicade treatments and am no better off than I was in the beginning.  I want to ask my RD to put me on Orencia.  My insurance company sent me a request to ask him to put me on the generic Fosamax and he didn't want to because it might upset my stomach.  He is very difficult to work with.  I told him there was only one way to find out and I was willing to risk it because it would save me a month.  So he finally gave in and wrote me a prescription for one month to try it.  I haven't had any problems.  Just wondering if anyone else has found improvement after switching to Orencia from another biologic.   I am willing to insist on it  if it will give me some relief.

Have a great, pain free day. Hey Dogmom, I would love to hear about  your experience with Orencia.  I am getting ready to start next month after Humeria and Enbrel have not worked.  Did you have any side effects? Anything strange and out of the norm? Just curious.
Thanks

After trying Enbrel and Rituxan, I started Orencia in April.  While I did start to see gradual improvement after 3 months, unfortunately it stalled and I've only gotten maybe a 10% benefit.  So it looks like it's time to move on to another treatment for me.

Jules, I had no side effects whatsoever.  Once a month a visiting nurse came to my home and gave me the infusion which typically lasted about 30 minutes, and that was it.  Very easy, no problems.

For anyone considering Orencia, please be aware that Bristol Myers Squibb has a program called Commence Orencia so that if you are on commercial insurance, they will reimburse you for your co-pay (for the medicine itself).  See http://abatacept.net/orencia/hcp2/content/content.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&channelId=-90941 or call 1-800-ORENCIA.
InnerGlow2008-11-03 13:04:52Hi anniemax - Like others have mentioned, I've had no side effects from my 9 months of Orenica treatments, other than as usual, a suppressed immune system.  I too have a visiting nurse who comes to my house every 4 weeks, and stays for about an hour.  I must say, of late, I have noticed that at about 3 weeks after my last infusion, I begin to be a bit more achy, and am looking forward to my next treatment.  I'm very blessed as insurance completely covers my infusions.  For now, this is my answer for my RA, but of course, I still have OA from 50 years of joint damage.  Hopefully it will continue to wok for a long time to come.........

Blessings to you and others in pain........
Dogmom
Hey Thanks for the info.  I am a bit nervous to start this new med.  I am just afraid that I am running out of meds to take and dont really want to start another one.  But, have damage occuring so have to do something.  What a bummer this disease is!!!!  Thanks for the information especially the reimbursement link.  What a great deal.  I will research it and apply later but great info.

Thanks all for your input.  I am going to insist that my RD put me on it.  There is only one way to find out if it will work for me and that is to try it.  I am fortunate that I can go to my RD's office for my infusion and he is only 5 minutes away.  I have funding from  the Patient Assistance foundation.  Counselor Jules, good luck, please let us know how it works for you.

Hugs to all

Orencia looks to be my last hope as well.  I wish that I could have had a nurse come to do my infusions when I was on Remicade.   For those taking Orencia, what was the first thing you noticed a real improvement in?  I'd kill for some relief from the fatigue so I actually feel like doing something again.

hi i have been on orencia since last jan 08 . i had failed all the other drugs , orencia is a very different type of drug it is not instant fix. sometimes it takes 3 or more mnths for full effect. i am starting to flare like the old days so i think i am not getting as much out of it . i do have good news the side effects are very low to nothing. and i tell you by the time i started orencia  i was so sick of side effects and i had some bad reactions so it has been a joy that way . but it is not  a fast acting one but i think i would rather have than crazy side effects and a stronger drug. anyways good luck......teresa

I have been on Orenica since April, I have LOADS of stress, I am taking care of my 89 yr ole Dad, he has Demmintia.....He is getting hard to take care of, this summer was terriable, along with my Fibro. & Ra....I didn't think I was going to make it, & I am always sore & can barley move the week before my orenica, BUT, this past 4 days I have felt great, my infusion is Monday,  I haven't even took a pain pill, & done some darn leaves......So I guess something has kicked in, or maybe it is the weather, I can't handle hot weather, & here in Indiana, it gets humid.....My nerves are ready to snap, Dad is getting mean, & wanting to mow the leaves......But what ever it is, I sure am glad.......I haven't had no side effects from the orenica.....KNOCK ON WOOD, so far.......Good luck to you
