Remicade question | Arthritis Information

I've been on Remicade for about a year now with no reactions until last week when 2 days after my treatment I broke out with a bad case of hives. I know it's not serious just annoying. And of course I don't even know if it's from the remicade it's just that every time I've gotten hives in the past it's been from medication. Has anyone else experienced this? Just curious.

My doctor says we'll have to wait until after the next infusion and see if it happens again.
Don't know.  Someone else probably does.  Good luck.I had hives last week when I started Plaq. I have been taking benadryl. Hope this helpsSorry, but benadryl is a good one.  Good luck.  Ci have been told always to go to the hospital if i break out in a rash after remicade.  but i would call my remicade nurse first.   i know a lady who started to get a rash the night after her first treatment the next morning she was paralized and if it had not been for her daughter checking on her because she was not answering the phone she would have died.   always have my husband wake me and make sure i can move in the a.m. after my remicade.    but it may be as simple as them giving you benadryl before an iv.  Those reactions can happen at anytime.  If I were you, I would take the Benedryl before the next appointment.  It's not like it will hurt you if you don't have a reaction.  Just make you a little bit more sleepy!  Of course, if you are like my 5 yr. old, it will have you zooming around the room like a nut.yes usually our remicade nurse will give it in the i.v. it can sting alittle and some people need other meds to go along with their treatment because we are all different.Seems odd if it was the Remicade that it waited until a year later to turn up, but as people suggested maybe the benadryl will help, or it was something else completely. My DD's boyfriend had a terrible case of hives when he was here this summer. It came out of nowhere and lasted about a week, he was miserable. Hope yours gets figured out. Thanks for all the responses. I waited several days before calling the nurse and after consulting with the doctor told me to take Benedryl and was also calling in a Medrol pack. I will only take Medrol if I'm in really bad shape which isn't the case. It would be weird to develop an allergy after a year, I agree. Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it. Have a good night everyone.

I never got any infusion reactions when taking remicade but was told if I did that they would give benadry before the next one to see if it would help.  (that is depending on the severity of the reaction)  Hives I think would be one such case.  Maybe I didn't get any reaction because I was also on prednisone already.  (5mg daily at the time)  I'm usually sensitive to drugs too so I was surprised about this.

I don't think it's weird to develop an allergy after a year though.  Maybe your body just needed more exposure to the remicade to do it.  Some people are allergic to one of the components of the drug from the get go though.  The human body is a funny machine after all.

Well... my RD tells all her patients to pre-medicate with something for allergies, mine was allegra D, before that zyrtec. If you forget to pre-medicate she will give Benedryl via IV. I have been getting Benedryl via IV since my 4th infusion. I guess she is trying to head off another episode like I had the beginning of the year.

Also before each infusion I pre-medicate with Aggronox, Ampicillin, 2 - Tylenol Arthritis, and was Allegra D but ran out.
I was told that you can develop a reaction to remicade at any time, no matter how long you have been on it.  I do not take the benedryl because I go to work after my infusion and don't need the extra sleepiness.  I have however starting taking compazene before for nausea and tylenol to help with the slight fever I always get.
