Wt loss? | Arthritis Information

I have read that wt loss is very common in pts with RA. I was just wondering when it will affect me....LOL

If I don't laugh I will cry.

Before I was diagnosed, I worked out 4 days aweek and was in good ..shape. Then I became inactive and gained almost 20#  (a lot for me-I am 5'1")My RD said inflamation should make me lose weight. We agreed to see what happens if I stopped taking Effexor(for anxiety). I slowly began to lose the weight. Now thank goodness I am back to my normal weight.  It took about 6 months.

The first thing I said to my RD my FIRST appt was "please don't give me prednisone, I know I will blow up like a balloon." He never prescribed it, although I have had two cortizone shots in a year. Now that I have had a remicade treatment, I am hopeful I can do more exercise. I was limited to swimming or 30 min bike ride. After remicade, I was able to do one of my "The Firm" workout videos although I had to make several modifications.

For me, gaining weight caused anxiety so the benefits of effexor weren't worth it. Since I gain weight easily, I plan on working with my RD to avoid prednisone as much as possible. I am hopeful that remicade will continue to work!....Jodi

If only that where true

I am still suffering from the "butt over the chair syndrome"...by way of RA and Prednisone. Thank ya very much...

I don't take prednisone. But I use to be on Paxil and it will cause the wt gain. Now I take Cymbalta. No wt gain with it. Just the regular flab......LOL

Lucky You...LOL.  I hope it always stays that way.  Maybe I need to change to Vodka...do you think that will help...

I am a tea totaler too.  On to many drugs to take any chances with the liver also...But I can dream about having a dream drink and it would be a Vodka Gimlet, stirred not shaken....LOL.

Boy I wish that were true. I was on prednisone for a month and gained 8 lbs which I've yet been able to lose.

Hi Kathy621,

I still haven't lost the 20 lbs from my first affair with Prednisone.  Now here I am again, with round 2 of the on again off again Prednisone Love affair and wonder how am I going to get rid of the now 40 lbs...

Like most of you, I too was a very active person, now I am lucky to get past the chip bowl. with out reaching in for more than my share and calling that EXCERCISE...Guess me an Weight Watchers are going to get very close, very soon.

I got a referal from my Dr for physical therapy and I am going to have her start me on an excercise program. I have got to get this wt off. I know it would make me feel better and look better. I am also going to join the health club and make myself go!!!!! I just know if I can get into a routine I can do this.

Hi Lesle,

just make sure what ever the exercise they want you to do, it does not make your joints hurt.  I had a problem with my right shoulder after the therapist had me do a certain exercise and it wasn't a week later I was in so much pain (Rotor cuff injury) I ended up in the emergency room.  I didn't do that exercise again.  I don't know if my shoulder problems are from the bad exercise or RA...but the pain in my shoulder has minimized somewhat...so it could be the RA and the meds that I take, are keeping it at that point.  Be careful, it doesn't take much to cause an injury for us.

I can walk 2 miles a day and I can jog in place (after I take my pain pills) for about 10 minutes and I do use (2) 1 lb weights when I walk and jog.  Thought about bringing them up to 3 lbs and only using them 3 days a week.  My heart is doing great because of the walking and jogging but nothing happening with the weight....Short of having some liposuction done I am not sure what to do for weight loss. Cutting back on eating and what I eat hasn't helped plus I am tapering off the Prenisone and I still have 40+ lbs I need to loose.

Anyone on here have any suggestions...Can use some help...

When I first got RA I lost 12 lbs in about 2 months.  Have since gained a little back.  But I was skinny to start with so I looked like death warmed over!
